Christmas gift

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my husband, who is a WW 2 buff. He liked it very much..........finished it in about a week.

Perhaps he did settle for less than victory

After enjoying the first two books in the series, Jeff appears have approached the third book with a lack of interest. Understandable to to the scope of the subject, never the less, unfortunate.

My difficulty in keeping an interest in continuing page after page probably reflects how it must have been for him to write it. I suspect he has another project dividing his attention, or he's tired.

The problem is that the book is more of a flat narrative, than dissecting the thoughts and feelings of characters, which he is so good at.

The first two are worth the read.

Hope he does the Pacific and Doug MacArthur next!

I love historical novels and this is another good one from Jeff Shaara. I've read all of his `war books' and this one fits right in.

I like the idea of being there without actually being there! Jeff Shaara is good at putting you on the front line or with the general at headquarters. It's not exactly a history lesson, but it is, as far as I can tell, accurate in the portrayal of events. It was a treat for me to hear private conversations and thoughts of historical figures like Eisenhower, Patton, Montgomery, and Hitler and his cronies. Shaara admits in the preface that this is a risky venture; but it certainly adds to the flavor.

Was Patton that colorful? Was Hitler that militarily dumb, and were his generals that submissive? Was Monty that defensive? Were the camps that desperately horrible? These are some of the issues that he presents. I give you a hint - `Yes' in each case!

I just hope he does the War in the Pacific next. Doug MacArthur would be a treat indeed!

No less than what you expect

Maybe the real problem with this book is that Shaara sets a standard starting with "God and Generals" and never retreats from it. Actually, it was his father Michael, that set the standard and style with "The Killer Angels" and the son carries on the family tradition. This is the third in the WWII trilogy (Rising Tide and Steel Wave previous two books) seen from the perspective of those that fought on the front lines and those that decided where the front lines were going to be. All of Shaara's books are well-researched, but the decisive factor that makes a Shaara book, a Shaara book, is how easily those facts are put forth in a fictionalized manner. The narration is being inside the head and thoughts of Eisenhower, Patton and Private Eddie Benson during the Battle of the Bulge. A style perfected by the senior Shaara. Not only does it give you a battle perspective, but the politics that surround the generals and their commanders. This book I have been waiting for since I have read the previous book - "The Steel Wave" and I can't wait to see where he goes from here. A pleasure to read for any history buff.

Jeff Shaara, a different storyteller who places you in the thick of it !

Jeff Shaara does not need a good reference from me as he has proved many time over to be an accomplished writer of historicaly (accurate) books, all of which I have read and (in almost all instances) reread many times. Shaara paints a picture of the rise of the United States from the tempest of its war of independence, the civil war and now a legacy of the Amarican involvement in the Second World War. Personaly I enjoy the books concerning the First World War more but that is a coincidence since this war is more of a mystery for many (including me) then the Second World War. Cornelius Ryan is more theoretical and full of dates and places, W.E.B. Griffin is more a romantic who discribes the lives of his mainstay persona through this war and beyond. Jeff Sharaa's series concerning the Second World War is exactly like his other books. Undoubtidly historically correct but mixed with a liverly discription of how this time influences the people living in it. It gives a history lesson the often missing feel for reality. All know what happended in Africa of in 'The battle of the Bulge', sometimes films even get the timeline right, but hardly ever do they get accuracy and breathtaking action interlaced with human drama en emotions exactly right as Jeff Shaara can !

Don't miss it for the world ! it will captivate you for many happy days of reading !

No Less Than Victory is the crowning achievement in master storyteller Jeff Shaara?s soaring World War II trilogy, revealing the European war?s unforgettable and harrowing final act.

After the success of the Normandy invasion, the Allied commanders are buoyantly confident that the war in Europe will be over in a matter of weeks, that Hitler and his battered army have no other option than surrender. But despite the advice of his best military minds, Hitler will hear no talk of defeat. In mid-December 1944, the Germans launch a desperate and ruthless counteroffensive in the Ardennes forest, utterly surprising the unprepared Americans who stand in their way. Through the frigid snows of the mountainous terrain, German tanks and infantry struggle to realize Hitler?s goal: divide the Allied armies and capture the vital port at Antwerp. The attack succeeds in opening up a wide gap in the American lines, and for days chaos reigns in the Allied command. Thus begins the Battle of the Bulge, the last gasp by Hitler?s forces that becomes a horrific slugging match, some of the most brutal fighting of the war. As American commanders respond to the stunning challenge, the German spear is finally blunted.

Though some in the Nazi inner circle continue the fight to secure Germany?s postwar future, the Führer makes it clear that he is fighting to the end. He will spare nothing?not even German lives?to preserve his twisted vision of a ?Thousand Year Reich.? But in May 1945, the German army collapses, and with Russian troops closing in, Hitler commits suicide. As the Americans sweep through the German countryside, they unexpectedly encounter the worst of Hitler?s crimes, the concentration camps, and young GIs find themselves absorbing firsthand the horrors of the Holocaust.

Presenting his riveting account through the eyes of Eisenhower and Patton and the young GIs who struggle face-to-face with their enemy, and through the eyes of Germany?s old soldier, Gerd von Rundstedt, and Hitler?s golden boy, Albert Speer, Jeff Shaara carries the reader on a journey that defines the spirit of the soldier and the horror of a madman?s dreams. No Less Than Victory further solidifies Shaara?s reputation as this era?s most accomplished author of historical military fiction.
