Remarkable trees of the world

Thomas Pakenham has now produced four books on 'Remarkable Trees'. They are all beautifully produced with wonderful coloured photographs, but it should be remembered that he is a very talented writer and the text associated with each photograph is well worth absorbing. I have a very full library of conventional books about trees but these by Packenham have given me a new insight into some of the most spectacular trees that can be seen in both Britain and many exotic parts of the world. The one about the Baobab is a gem.

The Tale of 60 Trees

Thomas Pakenham is not only an amazing photographer he is an excellent writer who captures his travels in captivating prose. His travels are not without danger and he tells the story of how he had to cross some gorges to find "Jomon Sugi," an emperor cedar. Whether he is seeking out giant camphor trees in Japan or gigantic cypress trees in Mexico he weaves together a story of his travels with a story about the trees he photographs. I was surprised to learn that the oldest trees in the world are in California. I was also amazed by the pictures of fig trees with extensive root structures. Some of the pictures are almost mythical with hemlock and moss taking over trees in Washington State. This book also has some delightful humor. I laughed out loud at the picture of six goats perched like birds in a small tree. Overall the stories are highly entertaining and the pictures are incredible. I can highly recommend this to anyone who loves walking through forests or climbing trees. Tree huggers will adore this book.

Pakenham does it again!

His abiding love of trees is evident in this deeply personal account of trees he's found and ...respected enough to photograph, research and write about. I bought this because we already had "Meetings with Remarkable Trees" and we were in no way disappointed. The photos are excellent, the trees selected really are remarkable, and the narrative is engaging. Not much else to say, both my husband and I love the book, and it's on the coffee table right now. We have had guests pick it up and also fall in love... attesting to the wide appeal of this photographer-naturalist.

A remarkable book on remarkable trees

I've been wanting to meet a tree lover who thinks the same way I do, and, it happened when I came across Mr.Thomas Pakenham's Remarkable Trees of the World. I sincerely recommend this book to everyone who likes trees, but also geography, history, people behind tree preservation in the present, poetry and literature. As an artist, I believe this book would appeal to artists regardless of what field of art they work in. It is inspiring, and it makes you envious (in a good way!!) of all the travelling Mr Pakenham has done to get the book done. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars ( I feel when someone is talented you can be very demanding of them!!) is that I did not see any trees in blossom (cherry blossom is big in Japan, for instance), and for that matter, any sorts of fruit trees which are on the edge of extinction (there is a woman in Italy who searches for old sorts of apples and breeds them). I think we owe that much to fruit trees. I'd also love to have seen more olive trees, another sacred tree in the Mediterranean, where I'm from. But, that said, the book is great, everyone should have it. And plant a tree !!

"A stunning volume" (Time) and the most magnificent book on the world's trees published in years.

The publication of Remarkable Trees of the World took American audiences by storm. Now in a handsome paperback volume with flaps, Thomas Pakenham embarks on a five-year odyssey to most of the temperate and tropical regions of the world to photograph sixty trees of remarkable personality and presence: Dwarfs, Giants, Monuments, and Aliens; the lovingly tended midgets of Japan; the enormous strangler from India; and the 4,700-year "Old Methusalehs." American readers will be fascinated by Pakenham's first examination of North American trees, including the towering Redwoods of Sequoia and Yosemite, the gaunt Joshua Trees of Death Valley and the Bristlecone pines discovered in California's White Mountains.

Many of these trees were already famous-champions by girth, height, volume or age-while others had never previously been caught by the camera. Pakenham's five-year odyssey, sweating it out with a 30 pound Linhof camera and tripod, took him to most of the temperate and many of the tropical regions of the world. Although North American trees dominate this book, Pakenham also trekked to remote regions in Mexico, all over Europe, parts of Asia including Japan, northern and southern Africa, Madagascar, Australia and New Zealand.

Remarkable Trees of the World is a lavish work that will be treasured for generations by all those who marvel at nature. Color photographs throughout.
