Story that stands out?

Tomorrow when the war began is a refreshingly original story about teenagers coping a great loss: the loss of their country and freedom. The way the writer describes the changes the main characters go through is very vivid.
I'm one that likes reading books that stand out for one reason or the other and this without a doubt in my mind is one off them.

If there is one slightly negative thing about this book than perhaps it is that it seems "girly" from time to time. Ofcourse, since the main character is female this was to be expected. However I wonder if it is really needed to discuss how well certain prisoners are hung or how confusing exactly Ellie's love life is.
Having said that, even this is part of the whole package and this package is entertaining, easy to read and easy to relate to.

Probably the most accurate portrayal of modern AUS teens.

Yeah, yeah it set in a fictitious war that would never happen etc. but what really got me is how accurate John potrayed MODERN australian teens. I'm reading all these lovely reviews from older readers, but i must say if you are australian and have teens make them read this book before it's too late. I'm pretty much writing this because there was an australian program that interviewed John M and all they did was harass him and trying to force him to say that this book has a political agenda. WHICH IT DOESNT. And it made me real mad. As a kid when i read this it was the only book that really I really had a real connection with it. So i'll just write about what i really liked about the book.

It describes everything about growing up in Australia to a T. Its probably the only book that has an accurate balance of what Australia is like in terms of race and social background. And it's not obvious stuff that most readers can pick up on. Australia is a multicultural country and that was well represented. But Australia is lucky that it doesnt have a massive divsion between rich/poor, religion or race. And growing up in australia we meet totally different people and have therfore have different views from our parents. Compared to other countries which there culture has stabilised i.e england. It's hard to explain. Little things like all young australians have friends from all races but that is NEVER portrayed accurately in AUS media which is weird (and people wonder why Australian drama isn;t more successful). And how schooling is a real equallizer here. I didnt go to a real expensive school but i had classmates who's dad's were bilionaires and some others who were boarding from the country and they were all treated the same. Also little things like how robyn is really religous (they exist alright), or the fact how near the end of the series the girls are still close but the boys drifted apart. It's all very accurate. And i dont know it somehow describes the differences between the two australian generations very well.

Sorry in advance to all the Grammar Nazis out there. I'm to lazy to spell check :P.

Brilliant. Highly recommended.

What would you do if you came back from a holiday to find yourself at war? Would you hide until the war ended or would you fight for your country's freedom? This is the situation seven teenagers find themselves in after a camping holiday in Hell. 'Tomorrow, When the War Began' is a thrilling novel for teens and adults alike. The characters are realistic and engaging and their reactions believable. Once begun, this book is impossible to put down. This book is not to be missed.

A must read but be sure to have book 2 on hand

I think I first heard about this series from Michelle over at GalleySmith and had bought it awhile back but only read it recently. I wish I had done so sooner. It was a riveting story about what this group of teenagers do after finding out their country has been invaded and their families being held prisoner. The interactions between the various characters was gripping and while there was some romance going on I liked how surreal it was to be thinking about crushes and relationships when all of this is going on. I wavered from relating to Ellie to being irritated by some of her actions and thoughts but for the most part I could empathize because it seemed so realistic. This book definitely had me wishing I had book 2 at hand right away!

Great Story But...

This is a well written story and I am looking forward to the movie but the story reminds me very much of the movie from the 80's "Red Dawn"

When Ellie and six of her friends return home from a camping trip deep in the bush, they find things hideously wrong -- their families gone, houses empty and abandoned, pets and stock dead. Gradually they begin to comprehend that their country has been invaded and everyone in the town has been taken prisoner. As the horrible reality of the situation becomes evident they have to make a life-and-death decision: to run back into the bush and hide, to give themselves up to be with their families, or to stay and try to fight. This reveting, tautly-drawn novel seems at times to be only a step away from today's headlines.
