Great study guide for the New Testament
I got this book for a class that I am taking at my church, but I had no idea that it would be this enlightening. It is an easy read and is full of helpful study guides. In reading just the first two chapters, my understanding of the
New
Testament
has been hightened significantly.
A+ Theological Survey
Whether you are pursuing a
theological
degree or just want to increase your knowledge of
biblical
history,
Encountering
the
New
Testament
will be an outstanding addition to anyones library. It is very well researched, easy to read, and for the most part scripturally sound. I would recommend it to anyone.

A Fantastic Resource
"
Encountering
The
New
Testament
" by Walter A. Elwell and Robert W. Yarbrough is a great reference tool for quickly accessing basic information about the
historical
context of the New Testament. It could be used in a classroom as a textbook, or in a pastor's study as he/she does sermon preparation. I am a pastor, and I find myself going to this book often, when I want some background information on a particular text for a sermon or a Bible Study. And the CD-ROM is a great resource too!

Clear and Concise
I used this book (and
Encountering
the OLD
Testament
) as a student in an online seminary course and really enjoyed the book. I'm not an "expert" theologian or book reviewer so I'm not going to defend the work as amazingly in depth or anything like that. What I WILL say is that, for me, it has served as an excellent NT
Survey
course text. I enjoyed reading it and found the charts, graphs, and many photos informative and insightful. I can say, for sure, I'm more knowledgeable of the period, the issues, the history and so on. It's not a stodgy old million-words-to-each-page monster, but it's also not a light weight piece of fluff. I enjoyed that every piece of information in the book was useful and enlightening. For most of the text, I'd even say that every sentence was important. I didn't feel like I was wasting my time reading any portion of it or that words were being wasted. My mentor for the course was a highly educated and experienced theologian and considered it an excellent place to start as well.
There's plenty of room to write in the margins of the glossy pages and each chapter is headed up with it's outline, and objectives. Each chapter ended with a summary, review questions, study questions, key terms and further readings. I actually looked up some of the further readings and thought they were actually well chosen. Oh, it also comes with a Windows XP (and older) cd of what I presume are additional materials and links, but I use a Mac and it was incompatible. I didn't feel like it lessoned the value I received from the purchase.

Studying the
New
Testament
can be an exciting--and intimidating--experience. This readable
survey
is designed to make the adventure less daunting and more rewarding. The second edition has been revised throughout, including updated bibliographies and focus boxes addressing contemporary concerns. The CD-ROM has been substantially revised to provide a more helpful and up-to-date interactive learning experience. Other distinguishing features include: - abundant illustrations, photographs, tables, and charts-all in full color - sidebars addressing ethical/
theological
concerns - focus boxes isolating key issues - learning objectives and a chapter outline - end-of-chapter study questions, review questions, and chapter summaries
