excellent study

A fantastic work from one of the best scholarly minds in evangelical Christianity. Noll's treatment is honest and fair, including enough detail without rambling. His writing, while still scholarly in tone, is thoroughly engaging and readable. This book is useful as an introduction to Church History, study guide for academia and local church, and supplemental text.

It is also extremely valuable for our current situation in the American Church, in which pragmatism rules supreme and historical context is ignored.

I highly recommend this work for anyone interested in Church history.

Turning Points

Don't care for the type font. It does contain factual info. Will use as a resource text for term paper.

Great Supplemental Text

As a Church History professor I highly recommend this book as a supplemental text that would complement an edited book of readings and perhaps a biography or two. This volume picks up on decisive events, and as such is not an encyclopedic text with all the facts and figures. Noll is a great writer and he knows how to synthesize very complex matters such as the Council of Nicaea. He does a masterful job in explaining this theological maze to students--especially ones who do not have theological degrees. Because of the brevity of the book, some important figures recieve very little space (St. Augustine) or no space at all (Abelard), and women are few and far between. Nevertheless, it served as an excellent text in my classes at Calvin Theological Seminary, where I taught before I was given the boot ("My Calvin Seminary Story"). Each chapter begins and ends with worship liturgy, hymns, and prayers fitting the time period.

Good survey of key events/turning points in history of Christianity

Very well researched, insightful, and highly informative. A good read if you are interested in things like: "how did the books of the new testament get selected", "how did the Pope become the leader of the Catholic church", "what caused the eastern orthodox branch of Christianity to split from the western church in Rome", or "what gave rise to the protestant movement(s)". Really interesting stuff - a bit hard to read - takes some concentration - probably not for the casual reader - but I have enjoyed it immensely.

Turning points but a continuing path

Mark Noll's work on the decisive moments in the history of Christianity is enlightening and inspiring. The author keeps denominational preferences under control and presents a thorough and fair-minded history. For me, the over-riding impression formed by the entire work is expressed by Noll in one of his final paragraphs: "Finally, the promise of Jesus to be with his followers "always, to the end of the age" (Matt. 28:20) provides not only a framework for studying the history of Christianity but also a fitting description of what Christian faith is, at its most essential level."
