OUTSTANDING SERVICE

A True Classic

Originally John Sherrill set out to explore the phenomenon of speaking in tongues from an objective, journalistic perspective. He found himself losing his objectivity when he became baptisted in the Holy Ghost. His life took on a whole new dimension as he was taught by the Spirit of God.

This book was written during the early stages of the Charismatic movement. Educated inquirers such as Sherrill, from a tradition where demonstrative worship was unknown, decided to explore the issue on his own. He became involved with the Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship International, and connected with God in a deeper way himself.

Sherrill researched the subject historically and found that speaking in tongues has endured for centuries, it just hasn't been openly acknowledged. He cites specifics.

In his candid manner, Sherrill discusses the dilemma he faced as he grappled with this leap of faith. He makes a convincing case for how much the Spirit has helped him pray for other people and get out of his self-centered comfort zone. This well-written, effectively-researched book documents a significant era in church history.

Beautifully Written And Fascinating

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The Author's investigation into the movement of early Pentecostalism was fascinating. I especially enjoyed his research into the collection of stories and testimonies from around the world of the Holy Spirit's movement in Pentecostal circles. I have read many other books on early Pentecostalism but this was by far the most honest and enjoyable. While I cannot agree with the spiritual gift of tongues as the evidence of the Holy Spirit in believers, I really enjoyed the writing and the personal journey of John Sherrill as he wrote this book. It never gets preachy or judgmental as to the necessity of all believers speaking in tongues. While I can't recommend many of the books I have read on this subject, this is one I can. Very well written and beneficial. If you are interested in a place between today's Tongues (Continualism) theology and the opposing Cessationism theology, I would also recommend the book I spent 7 years writing on the subject. Tongues Vs. Cessationism! The Great Debate Settled?!

A classic that has inspired millions of readers worldwide, They Speak with Other Tongues is the story of one man's encounter with the Holy Spirit. John Sherrill, a young reporter for Guideposts magazine, set out to gather information about a strange new occurrence happening all over the country. A skeptic when it came to speaking in tongues and the baptism with the Holy Spirit, Sherrill was determined to retain his objectivity while digging out the facts. What he found would change his life. As John Sherrill relates the biblical and historical background for speaking in tongues, examines contemporary events, and shares his personal experience, he gives life-changing insight into this still-for-today gift of the Holy Spirit. This book is textbook reading for any Christian seeking to better understand the Holy Spirit or walk in the power of the Spirit day by day.
