A must read for firefighters
Tom Downey has written an honest and true account of
life
in a New York City
firehouse
. With a keen eye and great observational skills Downey has docu
men
ted a world that most people will never enter or understand. He brings to life the men and their experiences working in the busiest
rescue
company in the city. Not since Dennis Smith's 1972 book "Report from Engine Company 82" has an author captured the true essence of the firefighters world. This book is a must read for anyone interested in the FDNY. These men are a throwback to the war years of the late 1960's and early 1970's - a quickly vanishing breed.

Last Men Out - Rescue Two
Very well written. I learned alot ab
out
the inside workings of fighting a fire. It made me realize how much has to be done to put a fire out etc.
Also, it took me inside the mind of a firefighter. Very easy read and
interesting.

Great story ab
out
the history of one of America's greatest
firehouse
s. Whether you are a veteran firefighter, or just looking for some exciting true
life
stories, you will enjoy this book. It explains firefighting in terms anyone could follow, while weaving in stories of inspirational courage and brotherhood. Certainly it contained one of the more touching recounts of 9/11 that I, as a firefighter, have ever read.

The last men out
This book is a great book. I love the way that they start it. They start by telling a story of a Firefighter from the early days. In the book
Last
Men
Out
they do a very good job of being realistic to the way firefighters act and conduct their task. In the book when they respond to calls they are very good with making it seem like it is in real
life
. Also when they are talking about rivalry all of that is true in my town and all over.
In the book there is a man named Louis Valentino. He was a firefighter that was in a fire and he was caught in a collapse. While he was in there the ceiling fell on him. I also have another favorite scene it is when they were at a fire and there was a disabled man in the hall way. When a firefighter went in and searched for him he got caught in the hallway with the fire closing in on him and he resorted to jumping over a banister and landing on the stairs. The man only survived one more day but the firefighter considered it a good thing because he allowed the mans family say good bye.
There were a couple things that I didn't like. In the book they did a lot of bouncing from the early years to the more present years. I didn't like this because it got a little confusing to when it was going on. But other than that it was fine.
I think that the kind of person that would like this book is a person that likes adrenaline or a person that is a firefighter or want s to be.
This book gives a great view on firefighters it is very accurate.

One of the best fire service books ever written
Tom Downey, nephew of late Chief Ray Downey, has created a near-masterpiece. Works like this, related to the fire service, are rare; Downey is able to describe the social hierarchy of
Rescue
2 (FDNY) and what it really takes to gain acceptance with this elite crew. He also describes the heartbreak of losing brother firefighters on 9/11 and the long road that these
men
are taking to heal. It is a book that you will not be able to put down.
"An insightful, dramatic and emotional tale that deserves a place alongside Dennis Smith's classic firefighting memoir, Report from Engine Co. 82." -Terry Golway, New York Post
Brooklyn's
Rescue
2 has long been known as one of the country's top
firehouse
s, a model for depart
men
ts nationwide. Recognized for their expertise and commitment, Rescue 2's men handle only big blazes where civilians and their fellow firemen are in danger.
Beginning in 1996 with legendary Captain Ray Downey's promotion, the story follows the trials of his replacement, Phil Ruvolo, as he works to win over his headstrong men. A new Rescue 2 is forged through changes in firefighting methods and blazes that quickly become legend. Through the crisis of 9/11 and the subsequent rebuilding, Ruvolo triumphantly fills the late Downey's boots, heading Rescue 2 toward a future worthy of its past, its heroes, its city.
Filled with firefighting detail, raucous humor, and gritty real-
life
scenes, The
Last
Men
Out
is a new classic for an era in firefighting that is more risky, complicated, and dramatic than any before.
