Great Book for Portrait Sculptors
I am a professional sculptor working on life size figurative sculptures cast in bronze that are placed in public settings.
Forensic
Art
and
Illustration
by Karen T. Taylor is useful to realistic portrait sculptors and painters as well as forensic artists. The book is extremely well-written with precise descriptions and supporting photographs making it easy for readers to understand.
The content includes anatomical information about skulls, muscles, tissue depth, and clear examples of what occurs with the face in the aging process. There is helpful information for drawing facial features and three-dimensional facial reconstruction. The book is full of useful information such as the size of the iris and what features are most important in facial identification. To capture a true likeness in a realistic portrait, these key features described in the book must be accurate. For example, the skull must be accurate as a starting point for a realistic sculptor to capture the essence of the person who is sculpted. Forensic Art and Illustration provides information that is helpful in my journey to improve skills as a portrait sculptor. This book is a valuable addition to my resource library on sculpture.

Forensic
Art
by Karen Taylor
Forensic Art and
Illustration
by Karen Taylor has brought together a wealth of resources in a single text. Drawing on her own extensive experience, together with the techniques, research and insights of some of the most revered names in forensic art and anthropology, Taylor's work provides a comprehensive foundation for the field of forensic art. She begins with a background in the development of identification and case examples that help the practitioner understand how forensic art can be used, its limitations and how research is progressing to form standards of best practice. This text explains the procedures for witness interviewing, step by step instructions for both 2 & 3 D facial reconstruction, and detailed charts and illustrations that assist in those procedures. Forensic Art and Illustration is comprehensive in both its meticulous depth of detail and the breadth of scope it includes. This book grounds the novice in the fundamentals of forensic art, walks them through the processes of facial reconstruction and composite drawing and continues to serve as an ongoing resource reference for the practiced professional. Forensic Art & Illustration has been the required text of each class I have taken for forensic art. I highly recommend this book as a necessity to anyone serious about pursuing the field of forensic art.

Unique
I have had the great privilege of attending 2
Forensic

courses with Karen T. Taylor. Using this text, she took her class thru this very unique and often misunderstood discipline, one day at a time. Each face is unique, and the discipline of applying the science, to the artist rendering, is a learned process that requires time, practice, learning and more practice. This book identifies a definite process to follow, and the variables that can influence the process of rendering a good composite drawing.
The book is comprehensive, one of a kind, and presented in an understandable language by a true professional. Information is easily located and this book, for me, is an absolute necessity and will be dog eared very soon. I am an Artist and an LPN, and would really like to do some good with this knowledge. I am looking forward to the next workshop and book. Susan M. Fleischer Artist/lpn

Forensic Art and Illustration
This well writen text helped me make a more informed decision before pursuing the career. The authors ability to share her mistakes makes this a superior text.
As the number of stranger-on-stranger crimes increases, solving these crimes becomes more challenging.
Forensic
illustration
has become increasingly important as a tool in identifying both perpetrators and victims. Now a leading forensic
art
ist, who has taught this subject at law enforcement academies, schools, and universities internationally, offers readers the benefit of her extensive knowledge and experience. Forensic Art and Illustration is the first book to provide complete coverage of all aspects of the field, and includes much previously unavailable information.Beginning with the first-ever in-depth documentation of the history of forensic art, this book proceeds logically through explanations of facial anatomy, practical methodologies and techniques, case examples, and a glossary of terms. More than 700 illustrations and photographs depict art methods used in identifying and locating crime victims and criminal offenders. Numerous successful examples, taken from actual solved cases, demonstrate applications of the methods and techniques presented. Ideal for both forensic artists who want to improve their skills and those who work with them in law enforcement, Forensic Art and Illustration is a practical guide as well as a complete look at the state of the art of forensic illustration today.
