Good, but not his best work

As a book reviewer for Thomas Nelson, I was excited to review Facing Your Giants by Max Lucado. Although I liked the book, this was not his best work. It took some time to get into the book and I never felt fully absorbed by his writing. This was a good story, just not as engaging as most of his books.

Max Lucado is an awe inspiring writer and teacher. His insight is very thought provoking and deep, in a fun and easy reading format. Facing Your Giants is no exception. The story of God's beloved David from his humble beginnings to his vast expanse of power, money and land, to his downfall and resurrection, is a familiar one, even if you do not read your Bible.

There were stories related I was not intimately familiar with, like the story at Brook Besor. We all face tiredness, and the desire to give up; so did the men of David's army. The quote urging us on: "It's okay to rest. Jesus fights when you cannot."

The most memorable words he wrote:

Focus on giants...you stumble
Focus on God...your giants tumble

A reminder to focus on God, not the giant blocking your view.

a perfect boost for your faith

Lucado follows the life of David from boyhood to king and filters in every day struggles through the lens of God's hand in David's life. I don't know about you, but I'm obsessed with King David. This book is fascinating on so many levels I'm not sure I can do them all justice without laying out the entire novel. I thought I knew about David's life pretty well from reading the Bible, but Lucado is able to dig deep in the details of David's life and the meaning and implications behind each of the stories.

Facing Your Giants is an inspirational non-fiction book which uses the life of King David, both his victories and failures as allegory's for every man. Goliath is the underlying character in this novel that represents all demons known to man, relationship difficulties, unemployment, bullies, addictions, abuse and anything else that might fit under that umbrella. Lucado has a stylized, easy to read format that mixes wisdom and humor. Major Kudos to Max for creating one great page turner.

If you feel like you need some extra help finding a fresh perspective on the hardships of life, "Facing Your Giants" is a perfect book for you.

Life can be difficult. We all face a few "giants" along the way. What do we do when we find ourselves in a situation, a relationship, or a crisis that seems overwhelming or terrifying? Do we run the other way, or do we face our giant? Max Lucado suggests that we can "face our giants by facing God first." He believes that when we focus on our giants - we stumble. When we focus on God - our giants tumble.

This book takes a look at life of David, and uses his life as an example for us. There were times when David looked to God and found victory and other times when he tried to do things on his own and failed.

If you have ever felt alone, desperate, or grief-stricken, lacked direction, had relational problems, or found yourself in a stronghold, this book is for you. Maybe your giant is debt, disaster, danger, deceit, disease, or depression. If so, this book can help you as you face these frightening situations. You will discover that with God, you can face your giants.

Max Lucado writes in a relaxed style which is very readable. At the end of the book, there is a study guide which raises questions that correlate to each chapter. These questions can help facilitate application either personally or in a small group setting.

I was personally encouraged by the message of the book. When I first started reading it, I was about to face a real giant in my life which required eye surgery. I am still in the midst of the fight, but I am determined to trust God and am confident that He will see me through. I do recommend this book for anyone who is struggling with their own personal Goliath!

modernly poetic

Max Lucado's book "Facing Your Giants" is modernly poetic. Lucado's style of writing is sophisticated yet understatedly simple. In this book Lucado takes the reader on a journey through the life of biblical hero David. You see David's good and bad and how he faces his giants the different times of his life. I think it's important to learn from other people's mistakes, it allows you to save yourself from the misery of making the same mistakes and having to face the consequences of such. Lucado does a great job of relating David's giants; to the giants we face today. I mean how many of us will be gunned down by our best friends father because we were just declared king? My guess is none. My favorite bit of advice from Lucado is the fact that David took five stones to fight Goliath. He suggests using your five fingers to remember those five rocks and what they stand for the fight your giant. In fact I am constantly looking at my fingers reminding myself of those stones. If a young-teenage Sheppard boy can beat his giant, I can beat mine. There is also a very helpful study guide to finish the book off.
