Indispensable for understanding the Thoth Tarot
Anyone who studies the
Thoth
Tarot
, or perhaps any tarot, should read this. It really brings out the mythos surrounding each card into full bloom, making a living form of divination that allows and encourages further personal introspection and commentary. The connection with astrology, which is my favorite divination and study, helped me understand and associate the symbols along with planets, colors and numbers.
Walk Like an Egyptian
I bought the Toth
tarot
deck along with the
book
. It is easier to understand the book with the tarot deck handy. Maybe I should say it is easier to understand, because,
being
new to tarot, it was not easy at all.
The descriptions of the cards, broken down by trumps, court cards & small cards, does not delve into interpretations which may come up during readings, but with the zodiac signs, planets, colors, & other Qabalah correspondences, along with the allegories that explain why the cards look the way they do, and why certain things are shown on these cards.
Each card has a personality associated with it. They are considered living beings. So they mean different things to different people. No two people will read them the same. I didn't get all the information I would have liked, but I have a better understanding of how things work.
Aleister Crowley is a very colorful individual, and his knowledge of the occult is a treasure.

A Comprehensive Study of Tarot
The
Book
of
Thoth
is perhaps Crowley's greatest contribution to the literature of occultism. It exhaustively outlines the symbolism of the
Tarot
while describing in complete detail the designs of Crowley's Thoth Tarot deck as it was painted by Lady Frieda Harris in the 1920s. Sometimes verbose, the text can overload the novice with information but generally the information is of great value to the beginner and the master of the Tarot alike.
Essential reading for all occultists and for those who study the mysteries of the Tarot!

Full of goodies.
Toward the beginning of my interest in the occult, having only a vague knowledge of Mr. Crowley and the
Tarot
, I thought I would give this
book
a try. While most would not recommend this as a starting point in the study of the beast, I found it to be quite a wake-up call. It forced me to research not only his other works, but many other topics in general just to get a vague idea of what he was talking about. It ultimately made me smarter.
Crowley's Tarot deck is both useful for divination and beautiful, and the book shares many important insights not only in its design but in the tradition of the tarot in general. While some of his theories are questionable, it is still probably Crowley's most valuable book as the imagery and explanations summarize many of his diverse ideas. If memory serves, it was also the last book he ever wrote, making it a swan song of sorts. Because of the way it interconnects so many ideas, I would recommend it to any occultist. This is one of those books that gets better with every reading.

And something a little extra
This is an excellent source for the background of the
Tarot
and numerous subjects related. As well, I was taken with the style of the writing which gave it an extra fillip. Having read DuQuette and quite a number of other
book
s on this subject, it added some of what DuQuette didn't have room for. Not taking away from 5 stars, I did wonder why it had card illustrations, particularly when they were in black and white - a minor cavill (excuse the redundancy).
What I got a huge charge from was finding a stem of cannabis pressed between pages a little to right of center. How did I know what it was? I lived amongst smugglers for five years and I saw an occational "mistake" popping above the ground.
A few years ago one of my daughters and her husband helped me move and found a bag of "grass" pushed into a corner on a closet shelf. They appeared, looking sheepish. They explained, rather gasping while I laughed and said, "It's catnip, you idiots!" Well... gee... they did wonder. I'm still laughing.
