Tempation and lies we tell ourselves
This book hits the issue of tempation and
how
we as humans should handle it head on. Pulls no punches, which is what we need to hear. Every opinion by the author is based on Bible teachings.
Do you rationalize or compromise when faced with temptation?
As good, faithful Christian men and women, we would never lie to anyone, would we? Hopefully not, but according to Greg Laurie, the senior pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, California, we seem to have less of a problem
tell
ing a lie to
ourselves
. Maybe we prefer to call them excuses or justifications, but the result is still the same - we give in to
temptation
s and suffer the resulting consequences.

to
Compromise
, Laurie challenges his readers to take a closer look at how they tend to give in to temptation through rationalization and compromise when dealing with certain harmful behaviors. Although the cover displays a slice of pie dripping with chocolate and cherries, Laurie doesn't focus only on dieting, but applies his thoughts to any area of life.
Laurie points out that although temptation can come at any time, it frequently comes after a time of great blessing or when Christians have asked God to use them to make a difference in His kingdom. He explains how Jesus dealt with his times of temptation, particularly during his forty days in the wilderness being tested by Satan.
The author provides helpful guidelines to effectively combat temptation and gives encouragement to overcome it. The chapters are short so the reader doesn't get bogged down in deep theological studies, which suits the topic well. The questions at the end of each chapter are well-designed to focus the reader on the subject. - Jeff Friend, Christian Book Previews.com

Book Review: Lies We Tell Ourselves
Lies
We
Tell
Ourselves
( by Greg Laurie) is awesome book that really cuts you deep but helps you to heal and become a better man or woman. When I first picked up the book, I though it was going to be about food. The cover s
how
s a picture of a delicious piece of ice cream cake dripping with fudge, almonds and a couple cherries but after getting into the book I realized that this book is more than just a book about food. It's about the lies we tell ourselves when we are tempted. No just tempted with food but also with sexual addictions, alcoholism, drugs, cursing, gluttony, etc.
Greg Laurie, the senior pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, California explains that we, even as Christians lie and are tempted to do things that we know are not right (imagine that ... Gasp). We make up excuses in our mind make it alright but in reality it's not and that's just one of the tricks of the enemy.
This book really opened my eyes up a lot to
temptation
and how we are tempted. Pastor Greg really explains not only the tactics of the enemy but also how to overcome the enemy by the example of Jesus Christ.
The book is awesome in the fact that it's a simple read but yet it goes into a lot of detail. Pastor Greg goes through the three noted temptations of Jesus in detail and explains the significance of each temptation. One personal thing I found out is that while the Bible only goes into detail about those three (3) temptations of Jesus, we can assume He was tempted more than that based on Luke 4:13Open Link in New Window (msg) which reads "That completed the testing. The Devil retreated temporarily, lying in wait for another opportunity." This to me
say
s, the devil was defeated but wasn't giving up. He was just going to stay in the bushes and wait for another opportunity. This blew my mind away.
Bottomline - temptation will always be there waiting ... it's what you do when you are faced with it that matters.
Like I said, this book is a very simple read. Someone who normally doesn't read can finish this book in an hour or less and be blessed beyond measure. Pastor Greg has a great way of getting the point across and helping you learn and grow from what He has said.
I recomm
end
this book to anyone and everyone. Even Pastors ... it's a small 120 page book that will change the way you see things forever!

We all know what it?s like to justify something we?re about to do with a clever excuse.
Temptation
knocks at every door. No one is immune. But often we
put
ourselves
in places of vulnerability and then wonder why we get tempted. So, wherein
lies
the problem? With the lies we
tell
ourselves and our resulting behavior. In this engaging book, Greg Laurie takes an honest and humorous look at the ways we fall into sin and
how
we frequently rationalize our actions. Drawing from the pages of Scripture and his own experiences, he shares practical steps we can take to effectively resist temptation and put an
end
to the
compromise
s that will ultimately lead to our downfall.
