Boys Life

I read this book many years ago and still remember it, it is that good. Even though I'm female, I could relate very well. It's a great book for those who like a good story. I highly recommend it.

The gift a great story well-told

Boy's Life is an elegant and perfect title for this coming-of-age story, one of the best books I've ever read. Robert McCammon creates a living, raucous, sun-drenched Deep South where skinned-kneed boys grow up and learn about life, love and death, in the magic of summer known only to twelve-year-old boys. Friendship, mystery, the loyalty of dogs, the nutty relatives, the voodoo queen, it's all here in a richly woven tapestry of a young boy's journey to the other side of childhood, of fathers and sons and a coming of age amidst a changing social milieu and a good old-fashioned murder mystery. The characters are drawn with such care and beauty that a powerful sense of nostalgia suffuses the whole story; the idea of something precious and rare that won't come again. Worth reading and re-reading many times to mine the depths of a world in days gone by.

The magic of youth

What a great story! It is a trip back to youth, when the world is a magic place, full of possibilities that are only limited by imagination. Cory and his friends certainly have imagination, but they are also growing up, and their awareness of the adult world is beginning to grow. Set in 1964 in Alabama, Cory is coming of age in a world of turbulent change, where the realities are a lot scarier than the monsters in his imagination. He also confronts the reality of death, both for others and for himself.

The story opens with a murder, and the questions about the identity of the victim and his killer are threaded throughout the story, and Cory finds himself digging for clues to the answers. Along the way we encounter a river monster, bullies, moonshiners, and the KKK. Cory's story, while fantastic, still feels like an authentic story of boyhood. This well written book will transport the reader back to that magic time when we still believed we could do anything, but were learning the harsh realities of life.

I read this book many years ago when it was first published and I could not put it down. It's always stuck in my mind as one of the best books I've ever read. I would love to read it again, but I can't because of a spinal cord injury in 2001. To the publisher and the author, please create a Kindle version!
