Great book for sport history/women's studies
Todd has presented a new vision for women's exercise in the ealry 19th century. Her research is impressive and her findings illuminate an aspect of women's lives that historians have here-to-fore ignored. Great book for women's studies classes/or

literally, an "instant classic"
This book is, literally, an "instant classic." That's because it take modern scholarly methods and applies them to a subject area that's been uncovered until now. Todd's book is actually not esoteric at all, but deeply relevant to anyone interested either in 19th Century America or

history. Her research is thorough and her writing is smooth and easy to take. While the book's tone is serious, it isn't stuffy and boring like so many academic works. This book is superb, important, and even fun!
