A good bank to keep at hand

Building and delivering a great presentation is a challenging job, to say the least. There are so many things that need to be right at the same time: the material, the format, fonts and colors, animations, transitions, and more importantly, how you deliver it. Many times we (at least me) would fall into "bad habits" which compromise the effectiveness of the presentation. I have read other books on presentations, but I think this little book by Jeff Cerny is one that's worth keeping.

Specifically these are what I like the book about.
1. It's useful. The problems discussed in this book are real things that happen every day in real life - Powerpoint is even becoming another enemy in the command center in Iraq. And the tips provided by the author are practical without pretension and lengthy elaboration.

2. It's small. With only about 80 pages, it can be finished in a couple of hours. The last thing you are eager to jump on is a 600-page tome that drives you sleep.

3. It's very readable. I basically finished the book in one swoop. Well-chosen illustrations also help lighten up the little book.

So I think this book is a good reference you can go back from time to time to reinforce the good habits to help you deliver a remarkable presentation.

Great book

Ten breakable Habits is a great book to read before you prepare to do a presentation. I did my first presentation as an consultant and got the job, because I read the book and kept it simple.

Ten Breakable Habits is a Winner

The publication of Ten Breakable Habits: To Creating A Remarkable Presentation was incredibly timely. Public speaking is not a skill that comes easily to me, but I am going to be presenting soon. The idea of standing up in front of lots of people, all looking at you and waiting to hear what you have to say (and perhaps judging!) makes me nervous. I know I am not alone in this fear and that is precisely why I recommend Jeff Cerny's book.

I especially appreciated the point about `filtering'... sometimes we simply complicate matters by offering too much information. "Keep it simple" is great advice for taking some of the fear out of speaking publicly. I really enjoyed the segment on slides...how many times I have sat thru a presentation where the speaker seemed possessed by the spirit of the Dry Eyes guy...droning endlessly and reading slides word for word! (More listening and less talking is Jeff's advice, and he hits the nail on the head.)

To get over the fear of public speaking, one must understand the subject matter intimately, then practice, practice, practice. This develops confidence, and confidence is key to successful public speaking.

Ten Breakable Habits: To Creating A Remarkable Presentation gave me the boost I needed to establish confidence in this area of communicating and face my audience with calmness and a positive outlook. Thanks, Jeff! Keep the good stuff coming!

Powerful, Practical Presentation Advice

Jeff Cerny provides his readers with a most "remarkable" opportunity to effectively communicate through presentations. He combines advice on technique with the need for integrity and respect for the presentation audience. Each chapter provides practical insights - articulating those bad habits we all have and giving us hope through discussion of alternative habits. My favorite chapter is 8 and the additional resource chapter is a bonus. I have recommended Jeff's book to my undergraduate class as a must read. Thanks Jeff.

Addicted to PowerPoint?

Here's a book that gives you useful coaching on making your presentations even better. In "Ten Breakable Habits" Cerny leads us through common errors presenters make and offers practical substitute techniques. As a PowerPoint addict in a high-tech industry I immediately recognized the many pitfalls we step into such as filling slides with cool engineering detail that nobody cares about (except the presenter). Written in 2010, this book is in tune with the present day marketplace that is characterized by floods of information in a fast-moving, globally interconnected world. By applying quotations and illustration from notable personalities, ancient and modern, "Ten Breakable..." gives a creative boost to your work as a communicator.
