Gave me goose pimples
I did not just read this book, I inhaled it. I am about "Toby's" age and in fact was a US Marine serving in Vietnam at the same time. As I write this review I am sitting in the Rex Hotel in Saigon visiting the country for the first time since 1968. I finished his book as I sat in a little bar in Vang Tau. The irony was not
lost
on me. The book brought back a s
war
m of emotions. I absolutely loved it. As for some of the earlier reviews who said he learned nothing about the Vietnam war reading "
Pharaoh
" all I can say is "not true." The book is about every war. If you read it closely you will feel what young men in every war feel, not just Vietnam.
This is going to be one of those books I give away and tell everyone who will listen to read.
Mr. Wolfe, my tip of the hat to you. I am your new best fan. I've already been to one bookstore in Saigon looking for more, alas it appears I'll have to wait until I get back to California!

Pharaohs Army a Great Read
Once I started reading this book, it was so totally engrossing, I finished it in 2 days. It's a rather self-deprecating telling of his experiences as a US
Army
Special Forces advisor to the South Vietnamese in 1968-69 during the Tet Offensive. It is not a "
war
story" of violent or graphic combat, but of many engaging & intelligent observations, of himself, of the army, and of the events shaping his world at the time. At the end of the book I was left wishing for more.
Memories
Brought back great
memories
of DC in the late 60's and a different kind of look a Vietnam, from someone who was fortunate enough to shall we say, fly under the radar, just as I did there.

One of the Best Memoirs of the Vietnam War
This is an excellent book on many levels and for many reasons. I would give it six stars if that were possible.
Almost O'Brien
This is the second best book I've read on Vietnam. Only Tim O'Brien's The things They Carried is better. Brought back a lot of old, buried
memories
for me.
Whether he is evoking the blind carnage of the Tet offensive, the theatrics of his fellow Americans, or the unraveling of his own illusions, Wolff brings to this work the same uncanny eye for detail, pitiless candor and mordant wit that made This Boy's Life a modern classic.
