A wealth of information!

This book is much more than a "how to" book for bodybuilding. It truly is an encyclopedia of bodybuilding! Arnold goes into great depth regarding bodybuilding history, exercise selection and execution, and nutrition.

The photos of old school and modern bodybuilders are truly motivational. Plus, Arnold's wealth of knowledge coupled with his inspiring writing style makes it a must have in your bookshelf. My only suggestion is to work out less frequently than he recommends to avoid over training, but the remaining information is sound advice.

A Must-Have Book for Bodybuilders

I purchased the original book many years ago which helped tremendously and this new version is awesome. If you ever thought about entering a bodybuilding contest for the first time. Buy this book.

Another must have encyclopedia

Arnolds' encyclopedia, his first one from 1985 was my first really good bodybuilding/weight training book I bought this year and it changed my life for the good by teaching me some weightlifting basics I had been overlooking through the years of basic weight lifting a few times a week casually, and motivated me to do more serious lifting, and liked it enough that I decided to buy this new updated version, and it is a good addition to my weight training/bodybuilding library. A weight lifter or someone looking for personal fitness needs the good information in this book, but I advise purchasing several major weight lifting encyclopedias for your personal library, even if you have to buy some used and cheaply priced, my recommendations are defitinely get the Bill Pearl "Keys to the Inner Universe" and "Getting Stronger", Weider "Ultimate Bodybuilding", and one other bodybuilding encyclopedia I bought for reference is the Robert Kennedy "Bodybuilding, the complete A-Z book on musclebuilding", and a couple of other minor smaller books for variety of information given, though for Arnold, I am limiting my purchases to the encyclopedia for right now. My favorite sections are the double split systems mentioned, not that alot of my other books don't have those listed as well, and the good pictures from the good old days of bodybuilding and its sheer size really. Funny, the old book had bold lettering stating it was an encyclopedia, with Arnold's name in smaller print, now the newer version has his name in rather large bold print, and in smaller print the encyclopedia words, wow, what a difference almost a quarter century made, you will find in the new updated version more pics of Arnold in his various movie roles.
And of course, there is no reason lifters need any dangerous banned substances like anabolics to cheat their way up the success ladder, most of these encyclopedias warn and talk of the dangers associated with this sport and activity associated with "juicers" and "getting juiced", and Arnolds encyclopedia has an ample section pertaining to the dangers of, etc.

AND, I want to make it clear this book was updated with alot of newer information circa 1999, the latest medical knowledge, latest nutrition advice, along with changing out pictures of bodybuilders as examples that were current for the late 90's(though the color photo section of the 1985 book was changed to black and white photos this time), and I really do not believe there have been any real extra breakthroughs since 1999 in the last eleven years, so I believe this book is pretty much "current" in my opinion, and I can't imagine getting into serious weight training without having this book with others as reference. It's also fifty more pages than the older version.

Read this, This is for the people who give it one star

This book is great for all bodybuilders from beginners to advanced. I must say that before you start any of his programs you must read every detail of this book. You will get great results if you do what he says. You have to eat right to train right. With that being said you should take the basic supplements, Multi vitamin, protein (the number of grams of protein you ingest should equal your body weight in lbs), and Creatine. When you start this if you are a beginner and have never lifted you are going to be very sore due to the fact you have never lifted before, this is common and not a big deal. As you continue to workout your body gets use to the stress and recovers faster and faster. You do not need steroids, Arnold didn't use roids when he was 15-19 and look at him. He ate right and trained hard It's also a big mental game. I'm tired of reading these comments from these so called bodybuilders that didn't get results. I bet if I worked out with you I'd be depressed due to your lack of effort and execution. Not every damn bodybuilder used roids either, look at the first chapter of the first bodybuilders I imagine they are larger than all you people who rated this one star, and they didn't take roids. Quit being a pussy and work your ass off. This book is a great foundation for any bodybuilder. Read it, live it, love it, worship it!

You so called natural bodybuilders with no supplements, don't eat right. That is your biggest problem, that and complaining to much. Eat 4000cal a day if you have to.

A great resource

I have had a passive interest in weight lifting and bodybuilding for years. When I finally decided to do something about it this book was recommended to me. It's a little dated but it's very well written. Though the focus is on bodybuilding it covers a lot of fitness as a whole. The book is written with the beginner in mind using plain language. The various exercises are very well explained with photos, diagrams, technique tips, and suggested routines. There is ample information for advanced work outs as well. I would highly recommend this book for anyone looking to get in shape.
