Excellent and exciting read!

Wonderful international spy novel. I feel that the few negative reader reviews that I have seen here on Amazon are largely out of line, and obviously reflect the readers' feelings about sensative and controversial topics that Berensen presents rather than providing a critique of the book itself. There is no way to present these topics that will please everyone (besides, this is a work of fiction, people). If this handling of topics such as torture, profiling, religious persecution, etc. offend you, then you haven't watched TV (i.e. "24") or gone to the movies in a long, long time. I feel that the author's handling of these topics was very informed and reasonable and enhanced my interest in this novel. I can't wait to read his next 2 John Wells novels.

I now have read all 3 in the John Wells series and they just keep getting better. Looking forward to the next one.

Good Novel, Well Written.

This is a very good novel, whether it is a first novel or not. It easily stands on its own feet and would be highly recommended whether it was his first novel or his 20th.

I was a little suspicious of the slightly effusive reviews since he is with the New York Times and could certainly receive a marketing benefit from that association, however, those suspicions were unfounded and I found myself very entertained.

The negative: The book did pander just a little in the 2nd half to fulfill the "formula", but just a little. We cannot know whether it is the author's idea or if it was "recommended" by the publisher. In any event, the "negative" is VERY minor and does not slow down the fast moving plot.

The positive: Despite the negative, the writing was among the best I have read in a modern novel. This book was extremely readable and the story flowed very nicely. The plot was well done and kept me fully engrossed. There was no drudgery, it did not get bogged down in uninteresting fluff, there was some sentimentality but it was short and sweet and in no way hurt the book, and the writing was crisp and focused and appropriate for the genre.

A good story that was very well told. I was impressed and entertained.

it was an ok book

I read the book and thought it was OK. Definitely not an award winner but worth reading. as a Muslim i thought that the Muslims in the book were very, VERY, stereotypical. I thought reporters were supposed to be unbiased. oh well.
definitely a lot of potential, if only the author gave the characters a little more thought and NOT make all of the people terroris, then it would be a much better book. I would have given it a 2 1/2 but couldnt, so i rounded up.

John Wells is the only CIA agent to ever penetrate al Qaeda. While living in the mountains of Pakistan, he became a Muslim, convinced of the decadence and shallowness of the United States.
