Lightwood Publishing Review -- [...]

-Rating: -- Today's real threat of a terrorist smallpox attack is dramatically illustrated in a riveting fictional account. The Author has 25 years ER medical experience, and has thoroughly researched the implications of this threat. The scene covers six crucial days when a terrorist comes into a Los Angeles emergency room with smallpox symptoms.

Noteworthy: In addition to the timeliness of the theme, the gripping novel covers in detail information all of us should be aware of. The characters spring to life as time grows increasingly short to save our country from this pandemic. Readers will gasp learning how inadequately prepared we are for this event today, and how we can prepare.

Allbooks Review

One of medicine's great success stories is the global eradication of smallpox. There have been no new cases of this once-dreaded disease for more than twenty-five years. But could bioterrorists bring back this killer virus? And how deadly might be its effects on an unvaccinated population?

The medical thriller "Sledgehammer" presents just such a scenario. For the protagonist, emergency room director Dr. Kroose, smallpox is an important political issue. He wants assurances that his staff will be offered vaccination, while the parsimonious hospital administrators worry about the potential for litigation. Dr. Kroose is preparing to fight for his staff's welfare when Mr. Villalobos arrives in his emergency room. This obnoxious patient at first appears to have influenza. But does he? Could a hypothetical concern suddenly have become real and urgent?

Dr. Paulo J. Reyes is himself an emergency room doctor in California with many years of experience. He has a thorough understanding of the risk posed by smallpox, and has been vaccinated against it. He includes enough medical details in this novel to give it authenticity, and in a useful preface explains the scientific and political background to smallpox bioterrorism.

"Sledgehammer" offers a thought-provoking look at emergency-room politics and the smallpox risk, and it's also a fast-moving thriller. Share six days in the life of Dr. Kroose, and then decide for yourself about the threat of bioterrorism.

This book is awesome!

My father in law loves to read science fiction books and so I purchased Sledgehammer for him. He just got finished reading the book and told me this book needs to be made into a movie! He loved it! In fact over the past month he would go to bed early so he could read and dad usually doesn't do that. Plus he would walk around the house telling me little tid bits of the book. So if you are looking for a book to become engrossed in that really captures your attention then you need to read Sledgehammer.

Sledgehammer

Over the centuries, smallpox epidemics have devastated world populations killing an estimated 40% of those that come in contact with the disease. In 1796, Edward Jenner developed a vaccine that reduced the loss of life from this catastrophic disease eventually leading to the complete eradication of the disease. In 1980, the World Health Organization declared that no natural forms of smallpox existed and most vaccination programs ceased to exist.

Due to recent world events and increase in the rise of terrorism, however, concerns have been raised about the potential of bioterrorism in the form of manmade forms of deadly diseases such as smallpox. As much of the population has not been vaccinated against smallpox, this disease could easily restart its horrible killing spree. Moreover, new bioengineered versions of this deadly disease could be created to be faster, more efficient killing mechanisms.

Sledgehammer tells the chilling story of what if. The story details five days in the life of a doctor working in the emergency ward when a man dies of what everyone thinks is the flu. Confused by the death of the previously perfectly healthy man, this doctor must not only fight through his own doubts about the true cause of the death but also through mountains of bureaucracy and his own imminent mortality. The result is such a true to live account that it is actually quite alarming.

Terrorists attack with smallpox

Reviewed by Kelley Anderson for Reader Views (8/06)

An emergency room doctor with a history in infectious disease and connections above and beyond the hospital board, has what it takes to diagnose and prevent a U.S. smallpox pandemic.

Although very well written, Sledgehammer is thick on facts and ideas and slim on suspense. Having been an LPN, I understood most of the medical jargon that packs the book from cover to cover, but anyone with less medical knowledge wouldn't understand a lot of the terminology and anyone with more, wouldn't enjoy the book. Also, the romance was open ended. I would have liked to have seen the doctor and nurse either have a lot more feelings for each other or keep it strictly professional. It seems they just teased at the possibility of feelings and never really decided one way or another.

The one bright spot is that Dr. Reyes is an excellent writer and put the word together in an incredible way. With a solid storyline that is more thoroughly developed, he could write a book that would easily be a best seller. I would like to read a longer book of his to see if the quality showed through.

"Sledgehammer" is a light, quick read that leaves you wondering what would really happen if small pox would walk through an emergency room door in Anytown, USA. Would any of the doctors be able to detect it or would it spiral out of control and devastate the population?

In Sledgehammer, Max Kroose, an intuitive emergency room physician, suspects that a case of smallpox has presented itself on his watch in the emergency room. The atypical case of smallpox is harder to identify and more lethal than the natural occurring smallpox virus.

Armed with only a hunch, Dr. Kroose must watch precious times pass, as the risk of danger for him and his staff becomes more and more eventual. Kroose must attempt to convince a disbelieving hospital administrator and the public health system of the insidious presentation of this long dead disease—and the need to vaccinate the American public.

Only with the help of his mentor, Glen Hamilton—a top-level researcher at a classified bioweapons center—is the looming epidemic arrested, but tragically not before the horror of smallpox is once again unleashed over the face of the world.

And so this story begs the question of how vulnerable the world may well be one day when such an attack occurs. Should vaccinations be given?
