E otimo!

I've looked for many books to study independently Brazilian Portuguese. I've found that many geared for the tourist don't help someone who really wants to learn the language. Brasil lingua e cultura offers enough grammar and vocabulary for a person to learn Brazilian Portuguese on their own. Another text I have is for Spanish speakers but I find that the vocab is not arranged in any thematic manner which renders studying less interesting and practical. I'm no expert so I can't judge whether or not the cultural information given is correct; but I can tell you that if you are looking for a text to learn Brazilian Portuguese, this is one of the better options available.

Addendum to My First Review

Brasil!: Língua e Cultura is probably one of the better Portuguese textbooks on the market despite some of the aesthetic problems that I mentioned earlier. It should be noted that ALL textbooks have some errors or other minor "burps". I would like to again reiterate that the Lingua Text personnel were always very helpful.

Very colorful and useful

This third edition of Brasil! is a huge improvement over past editions. It is very colorful and useful as a textbook. Compared to other textbooks in the university store, the price is extremely reasonable.

Acceptable Text

I recently adopted this text for a college-level Portuguese program. I reviewed several other texts but found Brasil! to be an acceptable choice given the dearth of Portuguese materials in existence on the market. It could use a bit more color, better organization of grammatical topics, an improved and expanded manual for instructors, ancillary materials and an improved presentation and organization of vocabulary themes. I really do not have any difficulty with the text's focus on colloquial Brazilian Portuguese; nevertheless, I would prefer to have the grammar presentations focus on educated Brazilian Portuguese with colloquial usage footnoted so that students are aware of the differences.

Having taught Spanish for many years, I began with high expectations for a Portuguese textbook. However, reality set in once I discovered that there are really very few textbooks on the market. Initially, I liked the availabilty of the language laboratory via Lingua Text's website; unfortunately, my students complained about having to download Real Audio and using their telephone lines for up to an hour. Lingua Text does offer the lab on Zip disk but students either have to have a Zip drive or they must be able to have a CD made to play on their computer. In either case, students must still have Real Audio installed on their computer. The CD sound quality can be a problem if student computers are old and if the CD player is slow.

On a positive note, Lingua Text has excellent customer service and has always gone out of their way to serve my students' needs. In fact, because of the lab problems, they sent me the language lab on cassette tapes for me to use in our language laboratory on campus. By the way, Lingua Text allows for FREE duplication of the language lab Zip disk/cassette tapes. In addition, the lab and writing manual answer keys are available along with the language lab script.

I plan to use this textbook for the next two years but will continue to search for a better text. I considered a video-based textbook from Georgetown Press but I found them to be rude and unhelpful. Despite its steep price and apparent shortcomings, Brasil! is probably the best all-around text available on the market today.

This is the ideal text for first-year students of Brazilian Portuguese at the college or high school level. The book is divided into 20 lessons with structural, communicative and cultural goals. It is accompanied by a language lab/writing manual and an audio program, which can be heard at our web site.
