All you really need to get strong
I came to learn about Coach Rip via Crossfit when he was still associated with Crossfit HQ. After reading SS:BBT and then Practical Programming (the second part of Rip's bible), I realized that like he says,
strength
may be the most important thing in life when it comes to being fit. The book covers all the basics anyone needs to get strong and, if desired, big. I heartily recommend all his books. Currently I am an intermediate lifter using Rip's Texas Method and making solid gains week by week. This is a no BS, common-sense program that will get you strong using the basic lifts plus assistance exercises, all of which are covered in adequate detail. I highly recommend this book in conjunction with Practical Programming, as the programming section of SS is a bit weak. The two books together are all you really need, though his writing style is so entertaining, you'll probably end up buying his other books and following his blog on [...] as well. As one reviewer mentioned, it's dense, with tons of detail on each exercise. That's so you do it correctly, don't get injured, and get the most benefit you can from your workouts. It's not a bodybuilding, Olympic lifting, or even powerlifting book; it's a book about the most efficient and effective way to get strong. And it works.

SS
There is not much more left to say. This book is brilliantly written, with concise descriptions and drawings of the big five. Rippetoe is a fantastic author and also a hilariously funny man. Buy it now and throw out all of those useless bd mags.
Too much detail?
Great product but goes in to a lot of detail, which is important but can be confusing!

Great
Saw this book at the library and checked it out on a whim. Liked it so much I had to order it thru Amazon. Great info for those interested in
strength
training. Not a 'Bodybuilding' Book by any means. The author runs the WFAC which is in my home town so I'm hoping to visit there the next time I'm home to visit.

Foundational training book
There are so many reviews, I will just be brief.
This book is the best thing you can give a young person when they start training. It's also going to make a huge difference for someone that learned to train without the benefit of solid coaching, who has room to improve, which is almost everyone.
The approach is fantastic: Rippetoe focuses on just the basics, but goes into GREAT detail. Nobody else has done this. Most books have a brief description and a photo in the top and bottom position. This seems simple enough. But the surprising truth is, there is a lot more to it than that.
Developing solid form on the basic lifts and getting strong on those lifts is the foundation of successful
strength
training. This book makes that possible for people that don't have the benefit of a competent coach.
Without wanting to sound negative, 99% of the personal trainers and coaches you will find do not know what is in this book. For most people, getting a training partner and going through the instruction in this book will yield better results that getting a personal trainer. Trainers will do their clients a huge favor if they read and apply what's in this book.
My one grouse, I don't want to sound like I think they guy walks on water - Rippetoe is an expert on lifting form and lifting programs; his diet advice, while I am sure it works well for putting weight on young athletes, is not for everyone. Buy it as a lifting book, not a diet book, but buy the book.
