Consecration to Mary

This is a comprehensive guide for those who wish to learn more about themselves, Mary and Jesus and commit their lives to Jesus through Mary. Many wonderful insights, reflections and prayers.

A sure guide in preparing for the Consecration

Fr. Libietis has prepared a very good guide that helps one prepare for the consecration of self to Jesus through Mary. It is a most helpful and comprehensive resource. The editor provides four daily meditations for thirty-five days. The "stuff" of the meditations is drawn from either the work of the great Louis de Montfort or from works the saint recommends...that is, except for the meditations of Fr. Libietis, which he tries to slip into the work unnoticed. I use the verb "to slip in" because he writes his own introductions to the meditations on Sacred Scripture and St. Louis' writings, but then introduces his own writings without distinguishing them from those of the saint. Thus, the intellectually dull (such as I) can be confused, even lured, into thinking that these are drawn from St. Louis' work. These meditations kept me from giving this book a five-star rating.

Fr. Libietis' meditations are laden with neo-scholastic, narrow moralisms. For instance, his writings on the capital sins focus like a laser-beam on sinful action and not on the attitudes the sin represents. Let us consider his writing on gluttony (pp. 48-9). He writes, "Gluttony is akin to covetousness, in that it is greed for specific things - namely, food and drink. Gluttony is a disordered love of the pleasures of the table" (48). Perhaps, but there are many forms of gluttony that this definition excludes. Colloquially, we speak of a "glutton for punishment". What about an inordinate desire for consumption? Would not "shop-a-holics" be considered gluttons? One whose soul acts like a black hole, sucking in everything that comes across its path but producing nothing - THIS seems to be a better candidate for gluttony. No, "covetousness" is the inordinate desire to possess; "gluttony" is a voracious consumption of the world around me. "Do I have an inordinate desire to consume? Do I 'feed' off of the praise of others? Do I 'gorge myself' on web surfing, television, music, etc.?" Challenging questions such as these are left unasked.

I recommend Fr. Libietis' book, though I do not recommend his meditations.

A book to re-read forever!

This book takes all of the recommended prayers and readings of St. Louis de Montfort's Consecration to Mary and puts them in one book, and I think (I could be mistaken) with a little extra from the priest who compiled it, who is of a very holy priestly society.

This book is the book that every serious "soldier of Christ" needs to don as their spiritual arms and armor on this spiritual battlefield called life. It debunks the errors concerning Marian devotion held by many scrupulous Catholics who fear that going to Mary will take them away from Jesus... How far they are from the reality! It exposes the poisonous spirit of the world and our own failings, and encourages us to destroy "the old man, and put on the new" ... the most perfect image of Christ formed in the mold of Mary.

Full of striking revelations and powerful points, this book will be sure to rouse the love and devotion of the despairing, helpless, hopeless and lukewarm souls, and reinvigorate and renew the fire in the souls of the more spiritually advanced. I dare say that a person who has despaired of their salvation due to their sins, if they read this book ALL THE WAY THROUGH ... they will find hope. (Though they may want to skip the first time through the part which looks at one's self, since obviously for such a soul, it is the shame of self that causes the despair.) Toward the back of this book it reveals how Mary can save us even though we virtually have one foot in hell, if we but give ourselves to her care and to the love of her and her Son through her.

Do not let this treasure get by you. If it has gone out of print, find a used copy, or borrow it from a friend who has it even, but do not wait another moment to read it! The soul who sincerely desires to draw closer to God will read and re-read it for it's treasury of thought-provoking meditations and insight, and the practice and living of this consecrated life, if done in it's proper spirit, is sure to transform you over the years!

To Jesus through Mary!
