must have for MS3 OB/GYN rotation

Hello, I am an MS3 who recently completed my OB/GYN rotation at Maricopa hospital with Dr. Zheng, the author of this book. This book was extremely useful for several reasons. First, it is as accurate, evidence-based, and relevant as it is succinct. Everything is cited and sections that would otherwise be too long or exhaustive for the book (such as Antiphospholipid syndrome) have the most recent, relevant peer-reviewed literature on the topic so that you can look them up separately. The information in here is relevant for SHELF studying, outpatient OB, preventative ob/gyn, and even goes into suturing techniques and urogynecology. It is very comprehensive. Second, it is a small, very portable book. As any medical student reading this knows, having a small pocket reference for a rotation is a great way to quickly read about the key features of a disease or clinical exam/lab/imaging for a given diagnosis before you see the patient and then before you present to the preceptor. This book is as useful for OB/GYN as the red MGH book is for medicine, and less dense with more illustrations. It also compares to Harriet Lane for peds but again the advantage here is size with just as much evidence-based content. I plan to go into internal medicine and ever since OB/GYN I've kept the book on me because it is the most handy reference to have for knowing the standard of care for ob and gyn related issues in various clinical settings.

I admit that my review may be slightly biased by having worked with Dr. Zheng, but I am happy to endorse any work from a professor as humble and genuinely interested in teaching as Dr. Zheng is. Also this book contains a medical spanish guide at the end because Dr. Zheng works at Maricopa County Hospital serving a large hispanic population.

A great little book

A great, easy to use and comprehensive handbook. The dictation examples at the end are a life-saver for a busy intern; they also help students to prepare for a case in a step-by-step review. Knot-tying, suture types, and basics on handling instruments provide a leg-up to medical students on Gyn or other surgical rotations. The illustrations on basic ultrasound are huge for those running a busy triage for the first time. Overall, a great investment; applicable from med school through private practice!

BEST OB/GYN HANDBOOK

My most sincere congratulations to Dr. Zheng for a wonderful handbook. It is comprehensive, easy to use, and up-to-date. The pages are jam-packed with useful information that is outlined in a crystal-clear manner. I strongly recommend it for medical students, residents, and attendings alike. It has everything: basic chapters outlining knot-tying techniques and operative reports, excellent chapters dedicated to the diagnosis and management of obstetrical and gynecological problems, and essential and easy-to-follow information from the subspecialties. The newest ACOG recommendations including the new guidelines for the management of cervical dysplasia are clearly presented. Without any doubt, the Comprehensive Handbook was for me the one study material with the highest yield when preparing for the Oral Boards. Again, my most sincere congratulations.

Very useful

This is a great resource for a busy medical student, resident or physician. As a student, I would have loved to have this in my pocket. It provides useful information and includes references for more in depth coverage. Many books are overwhelming, especially for students on their clinical rotations. This book is a must have for third and fourth year students on OB/GYN rotations. I highly recommend this as a quick reliable reference.

Most complete handbook

The information in this handbook is brief, but not too brief. Enough information is given to diagnose and treat on the spot without other resources for many OB/Gyn problems. The surgical technique tips, templates for most major surgeries, and medical Spanish/English dictionary at the end make this guide stand out. Many helpful websites are cited as well. Very helpful to have on hand, highly recommended.

This pocket-sized book provides the most up-to-date and vital information on obstetrical and gynecological problems in a concise, portable format. It focuses on diagnosis and therapy, including management protocols, medications, and dosages. Common problems such as normal labor and delivery, preterm labor, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, cervical cancer screening, contraception, and STD, are covered in greater detail. Key facts on uncommon conditions, such as uterine inversion, puerperal SPT, chancroid, gonadal dysgenesis, and vaginal cancer, are also presented.

Medical students and interns can find pearls on pelvic and breast examinations and cervical examinations during labor, and they can also prepare confidently for quizzes by quickly glancing over the terminology, etiology, and other background information or using the handbook s mnemonics to recall the key points. Seasoned clinicians will find most recent guidelines on cancer screening, antibiotic prophylaxis, thrombosis prevention, and subspecialty referral.

Operative techniques and procedures such as knot-tying, instrument use, perineal laceration repair, amniocentesis, and measurement of AFI and cervical length are illustrated to help trainees learn the basic skills. Thirteen operative dictations describe the common procedures with the latest techniques, ideal for junior residents who face a seemingly daunting task.

The bullet-and-number format, full-color illustrations, color-coded sections, and open-flat design make the information easy to find and pleasant to read. With its sewn binding and sturdy cover, the handbook will endure years of vigorous use.
