Excellent, for scouts who want to become men

Avery Rover Scout over the world must read this book, and find what B.P. wanted to teach us about life...

Dated at first glance, but still very relevant.

Rovering To Success on first glance appears to be an outmoded, elderly text that invites ridicule and giggling at the language used, but if the reader can look past the idioms of the period it was written, and see the fundamental concepts behind what Baden-Powell is saying, then it quickly becomes an excellent guide for young people who want to live a fulfilling and adventurous lifestyle. It also provides an interesting historical reference.

Rovering to Success - for young adults

Rovering to Success is probably not meant for readership in the age group of 9-12 as indicated. It is intended for Young Adults ages 17-25 (though age group for rovering varies with region and countries). It is a fundamental reading for all Rovers and aspirants. Should also consider reading "Scouting for Boys" and "The Man who lived Twice".

"Rovering to Success" is the original handbook written by Baden-Powell for Rover Scouts, the most senior section of the Boy Scout Movement. Rovers are Scouts over the age of 18 (in Canada the mandate is age 18-26). This book is NOT intended for children aged 9-12.

Illustrated by the Author. Contents: Preface; How to Be Happy Through Rich or Poor; Rocks You are Likely to Bump on; Rovering. 'To sum up in a few words, success does not consist so much in gaining money and power as in gaining happiness. Many young men drift along with the rest of the crowd according to chance, and thus never reach happiness. From being passive be active. Don't drift. Take your own line. Paddle your own canoe. Only mind the rocks! Avoid them by cultivating other qualities." Powell explains the 'rocks" you are likely to bump on (Through herd temptation) Horses, betting and looking on at false sports. Wine, and other forms of self indulgence. Women, dangers of a wrong attitude and blessing of the right one. Extremists in politics, irreligion, etc. Powell elaborates on the antidotes to the 'rocks" (through individual effort) active hobbies, earning money, self-control, character, chivalry, health of mind and body, service for your fellow-men and for God. 'If you aim for it by practicing these safeguards, instead of being stranded among the rocks, you will win success and happiness." These and dozens of other inspiring maxims make this extraordinary book a useful companion for Scouts and Scout Leaders.
