A New Leaf
Having read many of the reviews here, I just want to submit my 2 cents worth to try to have this movie released on DVD - both the current version AND the original 3 hour version. This movie is, by far and away, my most favorite movie of all time. There are no flaws in it. It is Walter Matthau at his best and Elaine May is superb. Comedy in general gives people much more from Hollywood, than drama, despite what the Academy thinks. Laughter is infectious, health giving, and very needed. I'm kind of surprised it isn't more of a cult film like "Le Roi des Coeurs" (King of Hearts) or Rocky Horror. I guess it's because it IS a comedy. No matter, it's simply superlative, at least for those of us who "get it".

A true classic
I would like to think that in some alternate universe even the unseen 180 minute version is on DVD.

Best Comedy!!! Please make in DVD!!
This is one of the best movies ever written. The dialog is so clever and witty. The actors are perfectly cast. Such a great entertaining movie!! This really needs to be on DVD
Heart-warming to the core
What was so much fun in this movie was seeing two things happen: first, the statement by the manservant as he prepares for the camping trip, that despite the fact that Henry had no marketable skills, that he had done an amazing job of organizing and ordering Henrietta's household affairs. Second, that despite his best efforts, he found himself not just loving, but in love. And that came from Henrietta's unconditional love that she gave to him in naming the fern, and from his love displayed in how he took care of her.

Elaine May wrote, directed, and starred in this acidic comedy about a wealthy playboy (Walter Matthau) who discovers that he has nearly spent all of his fortune. Casting about for a solution to his money problems that won't actually involve work, he finds a desperate solution: He'll marry an heiress (May) for her fortune. The hitch: She's a social maladept ("The woman is feral," Matthau growls). Indeed, Matthau finds marriage so intolerable that he decides there's only one course of action, which is to actively pursue making himself a widower by bumping her off. An offbeat, funny, and dry film, with a wonderfully misanthropic performance by Matthau and a sharply drawn one by May. --Marshall Fine
