Linda's Musical Versatility Shines Through and Through

Who would have thought that Linda Ronstadt would ever be singing the "old" songs?? Well, she does.....and she does it beautifully in this video with Nelson Riddle. The famous Sinatra arranger and the 70's folk/country icon are brought together for a memorable evening of "real music". From the emotionally packed "Dream" to the hauntingly memorable "I've Got A Crush on You" Linda portrays a true talent for massaging the lyrics to these old standards while maintaining her own unique style that has made her famous. You can tell from her gestures and movements that Linda truly was enjoying herself on this video. Her chemistry with Nelson Riddle clearly comes thru. What a charmer she is!! I recommend this video to anyone who wants to see Linda Ronstadt at her very best...... And watch out for those killer bubbles!!

Essential Ronstadt: A Concert Video to Enjoy and Admire

Versatile Linda Ronstadt's in-concert performance with Nelson Riddle and orchestra--taped in Santa Barbara, California, in 1984--deserves a DVD release. It features two American artists--Linda and Nelson--who were (and remain) mistress and master, respectively, of their crafts. The selection of featured standard songs--from "I've Got a Crush on You" to "Someone to Watch Over Me"--are interpreted with uncommon beauty and grace. Uptempo classics like "Daddy" and "Mr. Sandman" team Linda successfully with a zesty quartet of bopping singers. The concert offers both well-rehearsed musical glories and unstaged moments of spontaneous fun. During every song's performance, the camera picks out key musicians at just the right moments and cuts away frequently for delectable close-ups of Linda. The audio mix is superb, the live audience is receptive, and the show's entertainment value is high and inspired. This is an essential video record of Linda Ronstadt's mid-1980s intrepretative work with arranger Nelson Riddle, and fans of either (or both) as well as admirers of the "Great American Songbook" will be rewarded with every view of this fine concert. Here's to its digital release someday...

As another thoughtful song arranger--Jackie Gleason--might have said, in character, about Linda Ronstadt: "Baby, you're the greatest."

One of the best ever

Picture this -- the talent of Linda and torch songs from the 30s and 40s and even a touch of the early 50s -- then add the arrangements of Nelson Riddle and you have one of the best combinations you will ever have the pleasure of hearing. And the production from her entrance to the finale will make you keep your eyes on the screen throughout. Even the costumes are worth the watch especially for us who remember our prom dates in those multi-petticoat dresses. I've been a Linda Ronstadt fan since she was with the Stone Poneys and this performance showcases her brilliant singing abilities to perfection. I taped the original broadcast performance from HBO many, many years ago and stupidly taped in slow speed so I have been searching for another copy for some time. I managed to find one on the internet and purchased. What made the original performance so fantastic was Linda's encore performance of her hit "Desperado". The new tape does not include this encore so if you order this and it does not include the finale you'll never know what you missed. And that's really a shame. PS--she does several numbers on this tape that were not on the original CD w/Riddle so that's another reason to spend the [money] for this.
