this is what you would call a classic western of its time.oh how times have changed

WELL-TOLD TALE OF EXCITING CATTLE DRIVE

"Red River" ranks with any western John Ford ever directed and it has John Wayne. Wayne turns in one of his best performances as a man who ages but remains tough and true to himself. The underrated Joanne Dru shows again that she was ahead of her time, portraying a physically and emotionally strong woman who bows to no man. Walter Brennan, a 3-time Oscar winner, gives another memorable turn as Wayne's long-time friend and conscience. The photography is stunning, as are the action scenes. Not to be missed.

The theme song of Rawhide - Seasons 1-3 went through my head while watching this movie.
I had just watched Gunfight at the O.K. Corral
which also shares the composer Dmitri Tiomkin.
This one one of the first roles for Montgomery Clift
and with John Wayne the acting is first rate for a western.
The long cattle drive is where the cowboy of the west made history.
The freedom of the open range and the six gun made a new sort of
culture that this western celebrates.

THE DUKE WAS NEVER BETTER

This is one of the great westerns. Wayne resonates with power in this film, and gives a superb, though very underappreciated performance ( by the Academy of Motion Pictures at least ), and Hawks definitely gave Ford a run for his money in directing this beautiful, and sweeping western epic, with its richly realised, often unfogettable characters, stampedes, gunfights, romance, and panoramic western vistas. Monty shines in his first movie, and Walter Brennan, John Ireland, and Joanne Dru are equally excellent. Classic in every sense of the word.

the majority of the dvd's I purchase are old, and the actors /actresses
are no longer around, but I would recomend buying this dvd just for that
reason.
