Considering it's age, et, al, not a bad video treat for the 'Trick...

...and how about the 1977 pic of 'Trick with TP
having acne! How about a newer and better pic?

The set list is pretty good and Nielsn funny as
all get out in the outakes, of the Australia 1st
released draft of this, which I got from mykaussie.
com first.

Archival Cheap Trick - A hidden gem of a concert!

I found this in the bargain bin here in Australia and was pleasently surprised. Unlike the uninspiring, lacklustre performance of the "Silver" DVD this concert is raw and full of energy, with Zander sexy and pouting, Neilson crazy and jumping all over the stage (did not detract one bit from his playing either) and Bun E just pounds those skins. I saw Cheap Trick Live in 1979 just after the Budokan and Dream Police albums were released and they were simply fantastic!!!! This is the only DVD I've managed to find that comes anywhere near that rockin ripping performance.
The version I have has a different cover - but is billed as "Live At Selenas, The Hordon Pavillion 1988" - so hopefully I'm reviewing the same DVD.
Downsides: The track listing on the cover is non existant and there are 22 tracks altogether but you have no idea from the cover what tracks happen when - oh well part of the fun I suppose (but a tad annoying). This is "archival" footage so the sound and video quality reflects that. If you're a purist I suppose it would bother you. Personally it gave the whole thing a kind of gritty feel for me. I'm a die hard CT fan from the 70's and love their old stuff and when they rock out. but even the newer songs like The Flame and Don't be Cruel were sung with passion.
If you want a comprehensive history of CT this is probably not for you as most the material is from the first 4 albums (which were the only ones I liked). There is also a 2 disc set of Silver (the Korean release) and that is pretty good if you like the newer stuff - but the vid quality on that is only a tad better than on this.
Basically - if I were to only own 1 CT DVD (of what I have seen so far) this is the one! I actually got rid of my copy of Silver after watching this.

ANOTHER RHINO DISASTER

I don't know if you would call "Cheap Trick" a super group or an arena band, but Cheap Trick definitely still rocks. In my opinion very few bands have had the longevity or staying power like Cheap Trick and kept the same members all these years.Having said that, the Cheap Trick "Live In Australia" concert dvd was a complete and total disappointment for me.Don't get me wrong, the band's performance was great. It's definitely the audio & video that's the problem here.Because of the poor production values, the dvd looks no better than an amateur concert video.Rhino states the sound is in Dolby Digital 5.1 and it's a complete disappointment. The sound is anything but consistent and the volume levels fluctuate way too much during the concert performance.I struggled to give this three stars because of the poor audio/video quality.Rhino should look and listen to recent releases of Triumph,Styx and Toto concert dvd's to hear what a 5.1 concert should look and sound like.Cheap Trick is one of my all time favorite bands but this concert dvd doesn't do them justice.

DVD Tracks Included:

1. Arriving In Australia
2. "Just Got Back"
3. "On Top Of The World"
4. "Dream Police"
5. "If You Want My Love"
6. "Clock Strikes Ten"
7. "Big Eyes"
8. Nasty Scrapes For Cheap Trick
9. "Never Had A Lot To Lose"
10. "Ain't That A Shame"
11. Food Break Down Under/"California Man"
12. "The Flame"
13. "Don't Be Cruel"
14. "I Want You To Want Me"
15. "Surrender"
16. "Auf Wiedersehem"

Hard-core Cheap Trick fans will bristle at this comment, but after their first few records, the band became exactly the type of flashy arena rock outfit that it had mocked. Cheap Trick used smart hooks, trashy lyrics, and a passionate yet fun approach that made other late '70s dinosaurs seem even sillier. But after their breakout record, Live at Budokan, it seems the boys began believing in the stuff they were singing and playing a little too much. The band's still around, and their live act can still make for an entertaining evening, but you got to take a lot of the bad with a bit of the good. Same applies to this DVD, in which the band was filmed in Australia during their comeback in 1988. The awful power ballad "The Flame" had restored interest in the band, and energy-wise at least, Cheap Trick seems psyched to be center stage again. Guitarist Rick Nielsen is all over the place (both physically and in terms of his playing), while Robin Zander's (is there a better name for a lead vocalist?) hair... Well, you've just got to see it. The classics (Surrender," "I Want You to Want Me") are great, "The Flame" sucks, and the fact that Cheap Trick plays the pretentious hit "Dream Police" live at least shows they maintain a sense of humor. Right? Let's hope so. --Dave McCoy
