I tried it, but...
Only 3 stars because the keyboard was just too small. I tried and tried, but finally returned it.
Screen size was fine - no problem at all. And it worked beautifully. I couldn't have asked for more - except for the keyboard.
I'm female and my hands aren't large, plus I even cut my fingernails back, and still it was a problem for me. If the keyboard had been just a fraction larger, I'd have kept it without question.
It's going to surprise you
I have the white version of this, got it for Christmas and am typing on it right now. The first thing that people will tell you is a problem is the keyboard, but it's a problem for about the first week. Once you have used it for any amount of time, the problems go away. (I did have to turn off the tap-to-click touch-pad because my hands and fingers are too big for my own good.).
But here's the real test of the thing: I flew to Florida a couple weeks ago and did something I had thought would be impossible--I used my computer on the seat-back tray with enough room next to it for a drink and snack. It was incredible.
I got the 8G because I wanted to be sure that I had enough storage for music. I plan on getting a 16GB card for it to put all my music on the thing. The 1GB of
RAM
is good, though this is not a speed demon of a machine. I don't need a speed demon. I browse the web, I type, I listen to music. Those tasks are perfectly suited to the
Eee
.
Also, when I need it, I hook a monitor to the thing. I thought I would be doing that all the time, but haven't needed to for a couple weeks.
Overall, I'm surprised by how much I use this thing. It is my primary computer now. It does what I need it to, it travels well, and there are an unbelievable number of hacks and helpers at eeeuser.com.
Buy one. You'll never look back.

Great computer if you're looking for something portable
I bought one of these (in white). The first thing you notice is how incredibly small and light it is. I was surprised by how
solid
the hinges felt and as a whole it feels and looks sturdier than I expected (but not indestructible).
The first charge takes nearly four hours, though I get the rated 3.5 hours of battery life out of it (turning the wi-fi off). The indicator is a bit strange - it turns off when the battery is charged instead of changing to green as in all other laptops I've seen.
Upon starting up, set-up is very quick. The included operating system allows for single-user operation with a tabbed menu (though this can be changed to a more "regular" desktop by following instructions on online forums).
I personally find the included prog
ram
s and operating system to be sufficient, though there are drivers for XP if you are terrified of
Linux
. I was going to change to another Linux distribution myself, but the included operating system doesn't give me any problems and has some interesting programs (though the ones I don't need seem to be difficult if not impossible to remove). The voice-command is an interesting feature, though I don't know that many people will use it - it only opens certain programs.
The included programs are good, but out-of-date. OpenOffice and Skype both needed to be upgraded out of the box (if you want to use the webcam with Skype, this is a must - as well as making sure to enable the webcam before the call). After updating Skype, I find that I can make very clear video calls easily and without connecting an external headset or camera!
The computer functions fairly quickly (for 600
MHz
) during normal tasks such as browsing and word processing. As an added bonus, both the RAM and SSD (the flash "hard drive") are upgradeable on the current 8g model, unlike the current 2g and 4g versions. This will allow for future upgrades to improve speed or for replacements should a drive or the memory fail.
Both the wi-fi and LAN connections work well. I've had a bit of trouble with the wi-fi connection at a university, but otherwise secured networks are no problem and easy to configure.
The keyboard is small, but I have small hands and it is easy to adapt. My only complaint is that the "up arrow" and right "shift" keys should have been reversed. There are instructions for reversing these on several online sites if you are comfortable with a Linux terminal window.
This computer lacks an optical drive, but with the SD slot and three USB ports you can transfer and run more than 8-gigabytes of data. You can recover (or load) operating systems with USB flash drives, so it is unlikely that you'll need to purchase a USB-DVD drive unless you are running something special.
All in all, this computer works great. The best feature is that it is tiny and easy to carry around. It is also extremely quiet! Since there is no spinning drives, the only noise is the slight hum when the fan occasionally comes on.
You can't get everything into such a small device, but
ASUS
managed to fit a lot!
