5 stars! 3 great strength - cardio workouts in one!

Jillian is motivational! I love her on Biggest Loser and really am not sorry I got this DVD. I don't buy DVDs but previewed levels one and two on Comcast On-Demand for 3 weeks before buying. The price is right and I really have seen results in strength, endurance and it has contributed to my 10 pound weight loss over the past 6 weeks! (It is combined with dieting and treadmill work as well).

I am 55 and in pretty good shape (5' 7" and 128 pounds). I've worked out all my life and I get a good workout from all three levels. I DO sweat! I love the combination of weights and cardio! I haven't seen anything similar to this DVD after searching a very long time and trying almost all of the cardio/strength workouts on Comcast Exercise TV.

The workouts are all based on the same concept of 3 minute strength, 2 minute cardio, 1 minute abs. After progressing through all 3 levels, I now mix and match the workouts, double them up, etc. All three have different moves, which I love because you don't get bored doing the same video and hearing the same dialog day after day and different muscles get used. You can make the exercises harder or easier depending on fitness level, physical ability or if you have bad joints or injuries. I have worked up to doing two levels together, which is another benefit once you've progressed and mastered all three levels. Jillian does a great job of explaining her concept and showing how to do the moves correctly, although I suggest you watch the entire workouts once before trying them, as sometimes she doesn't get to what not to do until a move is almost over.

My heart rate watch shows that I burn an average of 325 calories during each 20 minute workout, when I am working to my full capacity.

Just a note that at first, it's great that Jillian stops between moves to explain what's coming next so that you get up to speed on learning the routine. Once I learned the routines, though, I just went ahead and started the next move while she talked or continued the previous move (depending on the focus I wanted). That just helped burn a few more calories, so not really a complaint, just an observation.

Ok, here are the criticisms:

1) Not enough warm up! Too short and she also incorporates jumping jacks INTO the warm up. Be careful if you have joint problems. I injured my knee the first week because I wasn't warmed up enough and had to skip some of the impact routines for a week and ease back in. Now I start my own warm up before starting the video.

2) Jillian has two 'helpers': Anita, who shows the modified, easier/lower impact version and Natalie, for the more difficult version of the moves. Watch Natalie - my opinion is that she is less than enthusiastic and often 'fudges' on doing the moves when she thinks she's not on camera. It's hilarious and Jillian catches her once (I think in level 3). I did think it kind of killed the motivation at times, then I laughed it off. They should have used someone else when they saw those takes, but like I said, the price is right!

OK Workout

I like this work out for when I'm short on time or as an add on workout. One downside is I don't like how Jillian constantly stops to make pointers. It can be distracting. Some of her comments are cheesy, but the workout itself is decent. Not as tough as Cathe Friedrich's DVDs, which are still my favorite workouts---she does the entire workout with you. For 3 short 20 minute workouts though, you can't beat the price on the Shred workout.


Highly recommended!

I normally do not take the time to endorse products, but I have to with Jillian Michaels's 30-Day Shred because it's just fantastic! Prior to trying the video, I had been running/walking on the treadmill for an hour a day, seven days each week, with very minimal weight loss results. In addition, I restricted my calories to about 1200/day, but still...I was lucky if I lost two pounds each month. Once I started doing the Shred, however, the pounds began to melt away--I've now lost 23--and my body has not been this toned since high school, which is saying a lot after two children! Like some of the other reviewers, I alternate levels sometimes, and also do about an hour of cardio each day too, so I cannot comment on whether or not the Shred would work well by itself. But coupled with a little extra cardio, I believe that most people will see the results that they want. Yes, the video is challenging, but there's something inherently satisfying about pushing one's body to the limits. In addition, as Jillian says, when you push your body and achieve success and confidence, that transcends into all areas of your life--I am living proof of this, as I am now training for my first half marathon--something that, even six months ago, I would have thought an absurdity for me given the shape I was in. I highly recommend this video, both because it actually works, and because Jillian is very motivating.

Love It!!!!

I LOVE this workout DVD!!! I highly recommend giving it a try! My husband even does it with me, and he hates to exercise (so it's not too "girly"). It's great because there are 3 levels....you can do level 1 for 10 days, level 2 for 10 day, & level 3 for 10 days to reach the goal of a 30 day workout. There aren't many workout videos that I've done where I don't get bored by day 10 ~ so this is a great way to keep it fresh! I think Jillian is a wonderful instructor...not annoying at all. You will definitely be sweating at the end of the 20 minutes if you give it your all. It's a complete body workout ~ it really makes you push your limits. I enjoy the simplicity of it too...she sticks with the basics & doesn't make it too complicating or hard to follow.
Great for beginners or advanced....young or old....give it a try & you'll be glad you did!!!!

Finally Getting Results

I heard about the Jillian Michaels Shred Program from a friend and thought I'd give it a try. I have to say that her exercises paired up with some of the Biggest Loser exercises have finally given me the results I've wanted for years. I've tried numerous exercises, Weight Watchers, low-carb diets and still didn't see results. I have been doing Jillian's workouts for 8 weeks now and have lost 16 inches and 10 lbs. For those of you wondering if these DVD's work, they do, but you have to commit to them. I work out 5 days a week and eat smart. Give it a try, what do you have to lose.
