Extremely Useful to Olympus Camera Owners

I always appreciate a gadget that does exactly what it should without any grief. This BLM-1 battery charger is superior in three ways to Olympus's own product:

- It is smaller and lighter, but still sturdy (the AC plug folds into the unit).
- It has a 220 VAC adapter for European travel.
- It will plug into the "power plug" (formerly the cigarette lighter) in your car.

As a bonus, when combined with the Brunton 26 watt folding solar charger, you have the ability to charge batteries in the field, away from the grid and generators, quickly and conveniently. If you are a nature photographer, and need to charge batteries in the field, this gadget is indispensable, and does far more than Olympus's standard charger.

Works just as well as the Olympus charger

This charger works just as fast and as well as the original Olympus product, with the advantage that it is more compact -- no cords to carry, because the plug folds into the unit. It also comes with a car adapter, so that it can be used with the cigarette lighter or 9V plug, and an European plug adapter. Much better for traveling than the Olympus: it is lighter and more versatile. Great!

May 2009 update. My charger fried... One day I plugged it into a regular outlet and very soon I smelled that unmistakeable aroma of melting plastic. I don't know why this happened -- maybe some sudden tension variation? -- and I'm reasonably sure that this kind of disaster can occur with any electronic device, so I'm not blaming the charger. Yet.

I've contacted the manufacturer via email. There are online forms to fill and a melted charger to return, but so far it seems that the warranty will be honored.

I learned a lesson: when traveling, take two chargers. Luckily I had a couple of charged spare batteries and it wasn't a long trip, so I was able to keep clicking.
