The awesome Hudson tunnels

Living in New York for many, many years, it was very informative to read how they actually put the tunnels under the Hudson River and the politics behind it. A good read for those of us who can't learn enough about the history of New York City.

A fascinating story

The story presented in this book of the difficulty, sacrifices, and complexity of connecting the Pennsylvania Railroad with Manhattan is amazing. The author presents it in an interesting way while at the same time covering the technical challenges and solutions. Her style is clear and easy to read. I highly recommend it. I gave it to a friend whose reaction was the same.

Excellent read

Very well written account of the PRR build and politics in NY. Everyone should read it to get a sense of the Tammany Hall / NY political machine. If you enjoyed 'The Great Bridge' by McCullough you will enjoy this book.

History of New York City's Pennsylvania Station

This work is a beautifully crafted history of the Pennsylvania Railroad's efforts to extend its tracks into New York City during the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries. Relates all of the historical, technical, social, political and industrial issues, as well as people of the time, in a way that leads the reader into thinking that this is a good novel, in addition to a well-written history. When you realize that the old station no longer exists, the vision and work that went into its origins and construction take on greater meaning, especially in the jaded way we view the world today.

Wonderful Storytelling

The writing style in this book really helps to capture the innovative spirit and overall drive and determination (and the subsequent lack of it in later years) that led to the creation of a wonderful place... that I will never get to see in person.
