Screen Looks Like it's from a Desktop Calculator... Ick!
Don't get me wrong, the sound quality is great and the features are plentiful, but this thing's screen looks horrible and that's a factor that matters to me. If you're hiding it in a closet, fine. But I have to look at it under my TV and the one line of green text reminds me of my desktop calculator. It's 2008,
Onkyo
! Frankly at any price point, a
receiver
's screen should be better looking and more useful. Heavily abbreviated text on something as physically large as this thing boggles my mind. The pixels that make up the letters are measurable on a standard 5th grader's ruler. I realize that there is an on-screen menu, and it's pretty good. The major downside of it is, Onkyo uses its proprietary nomenclature to label menus and tools yet doesn't define what it means. Why not call it what it really is and then put a subtitle with the Onkyo name?
I have a Samsung TV that communicates with the Onkyo over HDMI. So if I turn the volume up with my TV remote, the receiver's volume actually goes up. Not bad. If I turn my TV off w/the Samsung's remote, the receiver automatically turns off too. The problem here is, if I turn my TV on with it's remote, the Onkyo turns on and stupidly flips to Game mode, not Cable/Sat mode. There is no HDMI cable in the Game port! All HDMI ports are properly associated with the corresponding unit. I don't get why it defaults to Game mode when Cable/Sat is the only HDMI with data coming through it?
Also, when I turn off the Onkyo either manually or via hitting the power button on my TV's remote, sometimes a loud, screeching sound comes from my TV speakers (which are "blocked" from working for some reason by the Onkyo, and nobody can figure out why). This didn't happen with my previous receiver. I haven't replicated it on another TV because I don't have another HDMI-capable TV. In fact, one TV is enough.
Finally, it gets HOT!
So, I'm going to send this back and go for something else. If you don't care about looks and common sense user interface planning, then this is the budget receiver for you! It does have great sound quality but I just have no tolerance for things that could have been done to enhance the user experience for next to nothing, and weren't.

Lost video signal
I had this product for about 2 weeks and absolutely loved it when it lost the video signal from the HDMI output. I was so impressed with it that I figured this was a very unusual problem and got another one. My vendor, WholesaleAV was fantastic and immediately refunded my money with free shipping back to them, but they did not have any more in stock so I had to order a replacement from another vendor. The replacement is also fantastic and I have never had better sound, or an easier set up than I have had with this. I have owned a Sony AV
receiver
, then a Pioneer AV receiver and the
Onkyo
blows them away!

Nice receiver
I just ordered alot of items from Amazon recently, so all my reviews will start the same, just with different sellers of course:
Amazon & 6av gets 5 stars for extremely fast regular/standard shipping!! Was supposed to come June 30 - July 3; I ordered this on the June 24th, it arrived June 26th!!
Now on to the product..It has many listening modes; most can be tweaked further. The auto speaker setup makes getting the best sound a breeze. I was gonna get the SR575 until I saw this. I forgot this came with 2 extra HDMI ports. Plus this handles audio thru HDMI nicely. No hiccups yet. I have this hooked up to some Polk 6750 speakers and a 46" Samsung 550 Series HDTV. Everything is nice.
It does get hot and the remote seems to want to be a somewhat universal sometimes. I got older gaming systems and at least one extra component hookup woulda been nice. And it says Theatre-Dimensional can be used with 5 speakers. So far I can only get it to work with 3. Some better info on that would be nice.

Very nice receiver at good price, but a few quirks
The
receiver
works very well, the speaker calibration feature is nice.
I did have an occasion when it stopped transmitting HDMI, and had to be unplugged, and another occasion when it stopped transmitting sound (from HDMI inputs), and had to be power-cycled (from the remote).
Onkyo TX-SR606
This
receiver
is awesome. The sound is crystal clear and the bass is dynamic. I replaced my Sony 5.1 receiver with this and was amazed at the difference. You can turn the volume low and still get the full range of sound. I am still running a 5.1 speaker system and can't wait to utilize the full 7.1 capabilities. This has more connections than any other receiver in this price range and especially if you are looking to utilize the HDMI pass throughs for all your HD devices. Extremely happy with this purchase. In addition, Amazon.com is great with inexpensive shipping and fast delivery.
