Absolute Genius!!!

I have no words for this film...well, maybe just a few...This film further supports my theory that some of the best horror movies come from the 70s...but aside from that, Black Christmas was better than anything I have seen lately. Who knew that such an old movie would be refreshing?

If you are a gore-hound..this is probably not for you. However, if you are interested in good acting and a good plot, then this is perfect! This movie does what a lot of horror films from today don't do; it actually tells a story and allows the viewer to get to know the characters..instead of the typical 4 high school or college student gore porn. There was no nudity..which would not be if this movie were made today (especially since it was in a sorority house). I appreciated that it felt like a real sorority house...like real college girls...not a bunch of porn stars bending over into the camera every two seconds...

Another great thing about this movie is that you never see the killer! Maybe an eye here...or hands...or shadow..but never his face, which is even more terrifying because you don't know what you're dealing with...you have to use your imagination...The closing credits, to me, were so haunting..all you could hear was the ringing of the telephone..which, after this movie...will make your spine tingle! True horror fans should definitely see this movie...and if this movie doesn't make your skin crawl...it's on too tight!

THE GREATEST SLASHER FILM EVER MADE 10 OUT OF 10

Where does one begin when describing how amazing the 1974 horror classic, Black Christmas? It is essentially the epitome and inspiration for countless slasher films. Without this film there would be no Halloween, no Scream, and many other great slasher flicks that we have come to love over the years. Amazingly, despite the fact this film is over three decades old, it still holds up extremely well and is still creepy as hell. This is easily one of the best horror films I have even seen and if you're a horror fan, this is one that is more than well worth checking out. It's funny thinking the same man who made A Christmas Story made this film (And unfortunately the Baby Geniuses films).
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: It's Christmas time at Pi Kappa Sig sorority house and the girls are having fun before most of them leave for the holidays. However, not everything is in good holiday tidings when the girls start receiving obscene phone calls from an unknown man who ends a phone call with the words, "I'm gonna kill you." The girls don't really think much of it, until one of their own disappears and a high school girl goes missing when she doesn't return from a band practice at her school. The police, family, and friends of the missing people are baffled by the lack of clues as to whom it may be other than the obscene phone calls that continue to persist. But as more girls start to go missing and start turning up dead, it becomes a race against time and a fight for survival against who might be one of the most terrifying killers in slasher film history.
MUSIC: The musical score is very eerie and it holds up very well. There's nothing really bombastic or loud, but rather it tries to be more subtle. It's very effective and I was very pleased with it.
ACTING: Aside from some slight over-the-top acting from Olivia Hussey, everyone was terrific in their performances. Olivia Hussey plays a troubled heroine, Margot Kidder plays a humorous drunkard who's quite vulgar, Andrea Martin plays as a nice girl who also has a sense of humor, John Saxon (Of A Nightmare On Elm Street fame) does a good job once again at playing a police officer, and there are several other great actors.
ACTION: Not only was this a really creepy film, but it also had a vulgar sense of humor, such as one scene in which Margot Kidder's character Barb in a drunken state babbles about how a certain species of turtle can have sexual intercourse for three days nonstop. This film also has a lot of cursing, which oddly seemed rare in older slasher films, but not this one. This film isn't gory like the stupid (Yet fun) remake, it builds more on suspense and atmosphere, which it succeeds at immensely. The phone calls were incredibly bizarre and very creepy ("I'll stick my tongue up your pretty *beep*!") which later go on to inspire films like When A Stranger Calls and Scream. This film will leave you on edge the entire time because it is a superbly and nearly flawlessly crafted horror film that I wish was more common in this day and age.
OVERALL: If you loved Halloween or any other classic slasher film, then you must see the film that inspired them all. Black Christmas is a must-have horror film that was wrongly ignored for at least two decades thanks to bad U.S. marketing. By the way, this film is better than Halloween. Yes, I went there. Halloween stole several ideas from this film and Black Christmas still does them better.
THE GOOD: It's very creepy, the set pieces, the direction, the acting, the humor, the music, and the creepy killer.
THE BAD: Olivia Hussey overacts a little bit sometimes.

"Horror Classic!"

Olivia Hussey, Margot Kidder and John Saxon star in this 1974
horror film. A psychotic killer stalks girls at a sorority house.
This is a great film and it definitely paved the way for slasher
flicks. I'm glad I got this special edition that has nice picture
and sound plus neat extras. I recommend this horror classic.

A review based on the Blu Ray version

There are plenty of reviews on this movie already so I won't get into the movie itself. But I will say that it is a good slasher movie. For me Black Christmas is a creepy movie. Why? This movie came out in 74 and a lot of the spookiness comes from the fact that the movie is old. The camera techniques used give the movie an eerieness that can't be found in newer movies. But enough about that. The blu ray version vs. the dvd version. I purchased the blu ray version of black christmas because it was cheaper than the dvd version. Go figure, right? So the extras on the two versions are the same. So it comes down to picture quality. And that is where this movie falls short. Since it was shot in like 73 it was on old film. Not ever with the expectations of high definition. The problem is that the blu ray is so clear that it shows all the imperfections in the movie and you end up getting a slight grain on the screen. It really isn't a big deal, but I wasn't expecting much anyway because of how old it is. So the bottom line is which one is better. I would buy which ever one is cheaper because you are not gaining much with the blu ray version.

The college town of Bedford is receiving an unwelcome guest this Christmas. As the residents of sorority house Pi Kappa Sig prepare for the festive season, a demonic stranger begins to stalk the house. A series of grisly obscene phone-calls start to plague the residents of the sorority and soon they will each meet their fate at the hands of the psychotic intruder. As the Police try to trace the calls, they discover that nothing is as it seems during this BLACK CHRISTMAS.
