Personal GPS
I use this while hiking new trails or hunting. Works very well and is very accurate. Batteries last a long time. This is a good tool for safety and not complicated. 3 waypoints is all you need for finding your way home or truck. Saved me more than once after dark while hunting.
Does what its told.
Perfect for exploring, Hunting or riding Dirtbikes. All it does is give you a distance and direction from your marked position, like your truck. you can mark 5 positions. Great safety device in case you or a friend gets hurt or stranded and you need to leave and come back with out getting lost.

A good device, ironically, for those who know how to use GPS
The
Bushnell
BackTrack
is an interesting
GPS
device with some great applications and some limitations that the user needs to know about. First, I have been using a Garmin handheld for a couple of years, mostly in off-trail hiking in the Pacific Northwest. I hike regularly but only use GPS when on tough cross country routes or in rough weather. I caution people against depending on them and that they should always be a backup navigation device. With that in mind, here is what I see after using the BackTrack:
The good:
- It comes on quickly and is very easy to use. It is easy to mark your location and seems to take you back close enough to get you out of a fix (remember, I'm not trying to find my car in a parking lot, I'm trying to find the parking lot)
- The interface is simple and very intuitive. It should be practiced, though, before your life depends on it.
- There are two situations where three situation where this device is worth it's weight in gold
1) Setting the first waypoint where you started gives you a straight line distance. It is very hard to judge distance off-trail and this gives it to you. Recently while going down a slot canyon in Utah we spent four hours doing what should have taken two. The BackTrack told me I had not yet over-shot our connecting trail. Pure Gold!
2) Using the three waypoints carefully, you can set up a route through tricky terrain. For example, first waypoint at where you leave the trail, second at key pass, third where you leave summit ridge. This use should point out how you kind of need to understand how to use GPS before depending on this.
3) It would work great for finding stashed gear (such as at the base of a climb) or a hidden camp.
The warnings:
- This is inexpensive GPS so it doesn't work well in canyons, deep valleys, mature forests, or on the north sides of mountains. These are a lot of the situations you will need GPS in, if you live in the mountains of the PNW or the Rockies.
- It would be easy to erase a key waypoint accidentally. I set all three at the trailhead when I leave even though that will be the car. Nothing more frustrating than overwriting your car with your second waypoint and your other two waypoints are in another state.
- There is no visual layout of your waypoints like on a regular handheld GPS. If you are a very visual person, this is fine but if not it's a limitation. I find myself doing a lot of trig in my head when using it (essentially because it is giving me straight line distances and I'm going someplace else).
In conclusion, this is a good device for the open, backcountry travel for getting back to where you need to go. It is also a nice second GPS for those who understand the technology and want an easier to use device from time to time.

Perfect product, fast shipping. Highly recommend - and have!
This is such a handly little tool, perfect for my needs. Have recommended to friends!
It does exactly what is says
This is a simple to use
GPS
. You can store 3 'way-points' and not have to fumble with a bulky GPS unit. I recommend this to someone who ISN'T interested in COORDINATES. Great for day hikes, snowshoeing, or even a hunter to mark his/her downed game so they can get back to where they were after getting help to drag the animal. If you want to Geo cache or review your long hikes and have more than 3 way points, this is not the device for you! I enjoy mine and the product lives up to it's claims. The reason it takes so long to get the GPS locked in at the 'shopping mall' is that thing called brains. Make sure you have a clear/unrestricted view of the sky. Hope this helps and have fun.
