Nano Adds Accelerometer, Genius, & More Storage

The iPod Nano has again been updated and improved, with some very nice new features. I was able to pick up a new Nano and a new iPod Touch at the Apple Store.

Accelerometer Built-In - The new iPod Nano has built in accelerometers like the iPhone and iPod Touch. This allows you to enter "cover-flow," browsing by simple rotating the Nano to the left or right. No longer do you have to navigate through menus to get to cover-flow, just flip the shuffle.

The accelerometer also allows you to "shake to shuffle," which means if you give the nano a strong shake back and forth, it will go to another track and shuffle your mix. However, it does take a fairly significant shake, so running should not trigger this feature, which made me happy. Fun feature. I keep wanting to do this though, so I never get through an entire song. ha.

Some games in the future, for the Nano may also take advantage of the accelerometer according to Apple.

Genius - This is the other new feature. When you are on a song that fits your current mood, hold down the center button. This will bring of a menu, which allows you to select "Genius." That creates a custom playlist intelligently selected based on the track you were listening to. It finds songs that go together. I've been very impressed with the results. It helps you rediscover some of your favorite music.

The iPod Nano is back to a long shape, which many find easier for holding. It also allows the display to sit longways, which helps in menu navigation. The Nano is as thin as ever, and is stunningly gorgeous with the aluminum design and many colors.

Overall, I thought carefully on how to rate thew new Nano. It wasn't an earth-shattering update, but when you actually get to use it, you do appreciate the new features and design. I find it a worthy a

4th Gen Nano- Great for running, exercise, and fun!

The newest version of the Nano debuted in September 2008... The improvements are significant and have made this fantastic player even better.

From a Running perspective, the Nano is great. I was concerned that the shake to shuffle would make the Nano unusable when running. Rest assured, the Nano works fine and does not shuffle songs from the tempo of running. The force needed to shuffle by shaking is quite substantial and has not happened once inadvertently during my run. I run with an armband. The only slight negative is that the accelerometer rotates the screen depending on the angle.. if you want to change playlists when running, you have to extend your arm vertically because if you just touch the wheel with your arm at your side, you get the widescreen view (album cover view) and not the standard menu.

Genius playlists- These are amazing. When exercising or just on the go, you no longer need custom made playlists... If you use the Genius feature and have a sizable music library, the ipod will make a nice playlist on the fly. The playlists are not perfect but they are quite good. For example, a Genius playlist with Snoop Dogg chose Dr. Dre, the Beastie Boys, Eminem, Cypress Hill, etc. And a playlist with the Decembrists included other indie bands. Using a Duran Duran song, a playlist with U2, Depeche Mode, and the Cure was made, which I thought was reasonable. For exercise, again these are great! You can choose one song and get a randomly made playlist that should fit your mood (exercise, cool down, etc....) No longer do you have to listen to the same playlist for your workouts or spend a long time making a playlist. (The only limiting factor for Genius would be if you have the 8 gb Nano, a small music library, or want to matchup a song from an obscure genre (if you have three Oldies the Genius cant do much.. but if you 300 it will be useful).

Size- The Ipod is slightly longer than the 3rd generation.. but it is not too big and fits nicely on the upper arm with an arm band.

Other new features I like- Search by artist- when in a song if you hold down the center button, you can browse all songs on the album or buy the artist currently playing...

Color- Green is great! :)

NOTE- I am running with Apple's Nano 4th Gen armband. It is Nike+ compatible and fits well. After a 5 mile run, there was slight fogging of the screen cover (Still legible though). Definitely take the Ipod out after each use and make sure it is dried off! But so far so good.

Big Improvement Over The 3rd Generation Nano

The tapered design is truly a thing of beauty. The curved finish and glass are aesthetically exquisite. Just holding and operating the new nano is something special. This is a huge improvement over the 3rd generation nano with its squat and awkward dimensions. The screen now shows a larger picture of the album artwork, which is great. My opinion is that the motion sensing device doesn't add much, but I could understand how some will like it. 16 GB of memory is great for such a reasonable price, especially when it comes to video. The only down side is that the 2 inch screen (same as 3rd Gen) is really tiny for watching videos or movies. You take what you can get from something designed to slip into a small pocket, but I can't see myself enjoying too many movies on a screen this size. The curved glass also picks up more glare than the previous nano.

With eight amazing colors, a new curved design, and great new features, iPod nano rocks like never before. The Genius Playlist feature finds the songs in your music library that go great together and makes a playlist for you. With its built-in accelerometer, iPod nano is made to move. Give it a shake, and it shuffles to a different song in your library. Turn it on its side to flip through your album art in Cover Flow. And tilt, move, and play accelerometer-inspired games (games available separately). Watching movies, TV shows, and video is even more fun on the sharp 2-inch screen. And your photos (up to 14,000 of them) look great in portrait or landscape view. Available in 8 GB and 16 GB models, the 16 GB iPod nano puts up to 4,000 songs or 16 hours of video in your pocket.

Find Your Music Faster
It's even easier to find the song you want to hear. Now you can view your album art in Cover Flow. Or just press and hold the Center button to browse by album or artist. When you find the right song, press the Center button to add it to your on-the-go playlist.

Rock and Roll Over
Tilt or turn iPod nano on its side, and you'll listen, watch, and play in new ways. You can flip through your album art with Cover Flow. Or, vertically speaking, see more albums and artists on the screen at one time.

Shake Your Groove Thing
Sometimes, we could all use a little unpredictability. And now you can shake to change your music. Just give iPod nano a shake, and it shuffles to a different song in your music library. You'll always be surprised by what you'll hear.

Let the Games Begin
Now you can get in on games made especially for iPod nano and the accelerometer. They respond to the way you move, so they're immersive, addictive, and a blast. The iPod nano comes with Maze, which lets you work your way through vast mazes by tilting and moving. You can find even more games on the iTunes Store.

Even Your Photos Rock
Pull hundreds of photos from your pocket and share them wherever you go. Hold iPod nano upright and see your photos in portrait view. Turn the player on its side to see them in landscape. Your photos look beautiful in their proper aspect ratio on the vibrant, 320-by-240-resolution display.

The World's Biggest Small Screen
Watching movies, TV shows, and videos is big fun on iPod nano. And the high-resolution picture looks crisp and vivid on the 2-inch widescreen display. So you can always have a little video with you.

Reduced Environmental Impact
The iPod nano embodies Apple's continuing environmental progress. It is designed with the following features to reduce environmental impact: Arsenic-free glass Brominated flame retardant-free Mercury-free PVC-free Highly recyclable aluminum enclosure
