A cut above the rest!

While most netbooks are pretty much the same, my interest turned to this one because they were the first as recognized to be using the Atom N280 processor. They also had the longest battery life: 9.5 hours. They also were sporting an 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. These made an incredible difference over the competition. ASUS Eee won hands down. I think the Bluetooth was the most surprisingly pleasant feature--paired to other Bluetooth devices including a sound system. It sort of made the ASUS Eee a music/audiobook server. Would have preferred a large hard drive, but none of the other networks offered one wither at the time of purchase.

An upgrade to 2GB of memory was a necessary one, at for the way the netbook was being used. Bought the Crucial 2GB 256Mx64PC2-5300 CT25664AC667 DDR2 200-Pin SODIMM Laptop Memory which was recognized immediately. Later, also added a Samsung USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive for Mac and PC SE-S084C/RSBN (Gloss Black) and a Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 - Slate.

Topped all of this off with a Targus Sport Clamshell Case Designed for 10.2 Inch Netbooks TNC101US (Black). Couldn't be happier with these decisions! The netbook and upgrades have served well since the day of delivery. ASUS won my vote!

Was 5 stars for 18 mo, now no stars

I bought my 1000HE in March '09. Love at first sight and it has worked perfectly till last week. (I do agree with the sensitivity of the track pad. I can be typing and all of a sudden I am in a different part of the page.) I digress. All os a sudden last week it will not boot to the OS. It goes to a screen and gives me the choice to try to boot in normal mode or in safe mode. Safe mode will not work either. I ran the Restore CD from an external drive. The process seemed to work as described, but when trying to re-boot now, the 1000HE now just hangs up the Windows XP screen. I tried the restore procedure three more times...no go.

Now what to do? The cost and time of sending it in for repair seems to long, and that is assuming that it is repaired correctly, which seems not to be a given from what I had read. Buy a new one and hope I have better luck? Buy a netbook from a different manufacturer? Choices, choices, and I don't like any of them.

Great Netbook.

I have only had this netbook a little over 2 months, but I really like it so far. Is able to play youtube, hulu, fancast, and other on-line streaming sites. Works good with Microsoft Excel. I hook it up to a big screen LCD using its VGA port, and works great. The function keys really come in handy, in switching the screen to work on the LCD, shutting down the screen, turning volume up/down, etc etc.

Battery life is very good so you can get a lot of computing without hitting a charger.

So far, I have not opted to upgrade the memory, and have no reason to do so, as it seems fast and does everything I want with its included 1 gig. (With one exception below, which I'm not sure more memory would help). You may want to use it for a bit to see if you need to upgrade. I realize the upgrade is cheap, but any money saved is money you can use towards a carrying case, etc.

The only complaint (which I knew going in, due to the reviews) is the right shift key is small, and you will most certainly hit the arrow keys trying to use it.

Bluetooth, and Wifi works great. Both connect right away and don't take up any USB ports, as both are built in.

Screen looks good both on the LCD or on its screen. Has no graphic card so I would say Crysis is out. Also, It did choke some when I tried to watch an movie I bought on ITunes. The different performence modes don't seem to make any real difference. Also, the CPU can't run some virtual machines due to the atom chip don't support virtualization instructions.

O, by the way, I'm running the included XP Home OS. Thats another reason I chose the 1000HE, due to it still comes with XP.

I will add more on its longivity as time goes on. So far, really a nice netbook.

Wonderful

Small, compact, lightweight. It holds everything important that I require, streams video, plays music, etc. Memory is limited so its best for taking to school, not as a home computer. I don't know how I ever survived without it.
Its totally adorable and I've named it Nikita. ^^
