While I wouldn't call this a "great" novel- it was indeed thought provoking and worth the day it took to read the book. The story of Little Bee addresses topics that few of us Westerners rarely think about- the unpleasant and more difficult lives of those who live in much of what we call the third world. It is certainly most difficult for women in these countries, especially young girls who are trying to escape the chaos and insanity that many of these nations are experiencing- thanks in part of the Western nations that insist on looting every natural resource they can get their hands on. I don't know if the author intended this to be a political novel, but there are surely some not so subtle political statements being made throughout the book regarding Western Dominance and the Capitalist view of how the third world exists to serve the needs of the West. My big problem with this book is that the author tended to venture off into the romance novel territory a little too much- I mean what was the point of the character Lawrence anyway? Other than that, a book worth reading.

Wonderful Novel

Little Bee was the first book since The Red Tent that drilled to my core and will reside there forever.

Sad, but worth reading

This book is about what happens when events we cannot control take over our lives and how often our lives become intermingled in ways we never would have predicted or wanted. Little Bee is a compelling character and you can't help but root for her. She is the heroine in this book and her presence shines a bright light on the failings of several other characters.

This book is rife with unpleasant elements. Things we'd rather not think about. Things we want to stay far away from. The author manages to put lots of those things right in your lap and show you how they could very easily wind up there in real life.

Little Bee will challenge your thinking about your beliefs, your worldview and maybe even humanity overall. Well worth reading.

Amazing Reflection of Who You Are

I'm shocked to see that this book isn't given more credit. This is one of the most profound and beautifully written books I've come across in a while. Some of the passages will truly cause you to pause and think.

Little Bee - it's an exploration of life through the eyes a refugee who exposes the inner souls of those of the "civilized" world, where one nods at "idioms" because it makes them look educated and knowledgeable; where love isn't enduring or worth fighting for; and where one is so wrapped up in his/her problems that they failed to acknowledge the many blessings of their life.

Like many people, I don't want to ruin or give away the plot, but believe me, it's a MUST READ!!!!!

WE DON'T WANT TO TELL YOU TOO MUCH ABOUT THIS BOOK.

It is a truly special story and we don't want to spoil it.

Nevertheless, you need to know something, so we will just say this:

It is extremely funny, but the African beach scene is horrific.

The story starts there, but the book doesn't.

And it's what happens afterward that is most important.

Once you have read it, you'll want to tell everyone about it. When you do, please don't tell them what happens either. The magic is in how it unfolds.
