Carpenters
No better group for easy listening! They were popular when I got married, we used several of their songs in our wedding. still brings tears to my eyes to hear them!!! So sad that Karen had to pass away so young.
Wow
The music on this is awesome. It is sad that they were not around longer to sing more great songs.
The Carpenters' Quagmire of Hits Collections, Part Three
I am trying to review every hits collection, since I've bought four of them and am still looking for a non-remixed set that doesn't screw up "Top of the World" and "Yesterday Once More" like "Ultimate Collection" did.
Jim Bagley's review is much appreciated for showing what's been remixed by that obsessive Mr. Carpenter (almost everything) and what hasn't been (almost nothing). Because the mixes are really not bad, and the song selection on here is among the best anywhere, I think this merits recommendation for anyone who needs a reasonably-priced intro to the amazing voice of Karen Carpenter. I also like the way this uses the cover art from the all-time classic
Gold
: 1969-1973. (My cover does anyway: I've also seen this with Karen and Richard on the cover.)
An example of a good remix is "Goodbye To Love." Because this is the most rock-oriented of the duo's hits, kicking up the drums and rerecording the piano to match--but not overpower--Karen's vocal works for me. Do I still prefer the original? YES and it annoys me that kids looking no further will think this is how it always sounded. But for those of us who have both versions, this is OK.
Unlike the big "Essential" box or the "Ultimate Collection", this at least has the non-LP version of the #1 hit "Top of the World". It also has "Yesterday Once More" without seguing into loud motor revving like those two collections. And the single version of "Solitaire" is a big plus.
Until a better package of original mixes comes along, which could be never, "Gold 35" seems to give the most bang for your buck.

A Special Memo to Richard Carpenter -- How About More Rare Tracks On A Special CD ?
As much as I love the
Carpenters
-- and I LOVE them very much -- I'm starting to get a little tired by the endless and relentless reissues of Carpenters "Greatest Hits" and "More Greatest Hits" and "Greatest Hits Part 3" and so on no matter how many times they change the title......get the point? I know I'm not alone when I say we Carpenters Fans already have these tracks in one form or another. Jeez, I must have at least 5 or 6 Carpenters Greatest Hits on CD without even realizing it, and I know some poor souls out there prob have ALL of the Carpenters reissues on CD.
I have a very good suggestion and I'm gonna put this directly to Richard Carpenter (so hope you're listening, Richard) -- I speak for a lot of Carp Fans out there when I say to PLEASE give us something different starting from this point forward. I was thinking maybe you could obtain the rights to some of your past LIVE performances that you & Karen performed overseas where you guys were EXTREMELY Popular!
I know you guys performed live in places like Japan and Europe where a lot of those performances were taped, so those live tracks do exist and probably collecting dust in some vault in a storage room somewhere. I know we would all go to heaven if someday (maybe in year 2010) if you could issue a disc of previously unreleased rare and live tracks!! I know that would just make a great Thanksgiving present and Christmas gift, especially on Amazon where it would sell like HOTCAKES!!
There already exists one Carpenters Live album "Carpenters - Live From London" issued on vinyl in 1976 and prob reissued on CD, but good luck if you try to find it. I see it maybe once in a blue moon where it lists for $50 on EBay. Is it possible to maybe even reissue that performance on CD again at a much more AFFORDABLE price? What about reissuing your TV specials where Karen sang with a lot of special guests like jazz great Ella Fitzgerald and issue those live performances on CD? Again, that would just be DA BOMB !! You know that would make us all the more appreciative of your talents and miss Karen all the more.
So, Richard.....if you're listening and watching, how about adding this "Special Request" to your memo and see if a special Carpenters release might be in store for 2010?? Perhaps our Christmas stocking would be all the merrier and cheerier if this CD ever comes out.
Sincerely,
A HUGE Carpenters Fan.

Better than 40/40
I'm bit late (5 years maybe) to the game of reviewing the "
Carpenters
Gold
:
35th
Anniversary
Edition
" but after listening to the new Carpenters "40/40" 40th anniversary release I dug this one back out for another listen. I'm always critical of repackaged product and, unfortunately in some cases, Karen and Richard Carpenter have been repackaged more than most. This 35th anniversary collection however, seems to do a better job of rounding up the right material, tweaking just a bit here and there, sequencing the tracks as to transition smoothly from one song to another. I can't explain exactly why but for me this 2 disc set of 40 songs is a better overall listening experience than the new 40th anniversary edition. I could never imagine giving a Carpenter recording anything less than five stars if for no other reason than the beautiful expressiveness of Karen's voice but what I would truly love to see would be a collection consisting of nothing but the original non-remastered recordings. This material, as originally recorded and released, was wonderful enough to have taken the Carpenters to the top of the charts many times over and now, forty years later, people are continuing to purchase their material so the originals should (and do) certainly hold enough musical magic to be released once again in their original form. I collect the Carpenters music and believe I own most everything (domestic and international releases) but if I had to choose between the 35th anniversary and 40th anniversary sets I think I'd have to go with this, the 35th. 40/40.
