It does what it says! Stops Cats!

I use this to keep the cats of of my nice new car.

I have had one of these units in the past and it lasted me 4 years in year round New England weather. I am very happy to have another one and it is working great so far. It seems in the newer model that it makes a louder (audible to human) noise which startles the cats as well when they go by the CatStop. They do there best to stay out of the area where the CatStop is all together now. It has been in place for the past month and it is working very well.

Good deterrent but keep it dry

We had neighborhood cats using various areas of our yard as their bathroom and we tried out one Catstop. It worked! I placed it carefully to ward off the cats as they entered the yard in various locations, trying to keep it in spots where it would avoid the elements. Well, the cats stopped showing up and soon our gardens were no longer littered with poo. The best part was that we only needed to use it one location for about 6 weeks, then we moved it, and the cats didn't return to the previous location. They learned to avoid each spot this was placed in. After about 5 months of moving it around, the cats stopped pooing in the yard.

Keep in mind that the Catstop's field of view is realistically about 45-60 degrees directing in front of the unit, up to about 15 feet away. Placement is critical. You want to get the cat as it headed to the destination, but you don't want to leave them an angle where they avoid the Catstop. Also be aware that any movement will activate the unit, including people walking by, cars, birds, etc. Place it for maximum effectiveness but be careful of the battery life. We found a single battery lasted about 6-8 weeks in a high-traffic location.

CON: The Catstop hates water. These are not well-designed for all-weather use, but honestly I've rarely seen outdoor electronics that are perfectly sealed against the elements. We live in Portland, OR, where it rains off and on for most of the Fall and Winter. In one location I carefully wrapped the unit in plastic to keep it as dry as possible, making sure the sensor was not blocked at all. In other locations I placed the unit under cover to keep it dry.

But eventually the unit got wet and over time, the moisture killed it. As it slowly died, it became less and less reliable to the point where either the sensor would not trip at all or would trip constantly. However, it did what we wanted it to do and that was $45 well-spent. I'd buy it again if the problem returns, but this time I'd do a better job of keeping it dry.

I'd also recommend this to anyone I know, with that one caveat.

My neighbor feeds feral cats. If I had known that I don't think I would have purchased my house. Last count there were 31 cats roaming the neighborhood and this is an urban area. Needless to say these cats think everyone's yard and garden is their personal bathroom, it is just gross. I now have 3 of these and am able to keep the cats away from the doors and the garden area. They have to be moved around as it seems the cats get used to them. It is a constant battle but the CatStop is a great tool to help fight back.
