At last, Durufle's own interpretation is again available

This is the recording I grew up with, but it has been out of print for years. I tried to track down the master recording, which had been sold & sold again, as record companies morphed & coalesced, & pleaded to have it reissued in cd format, but had finally despaired, until I found this reissue on the UK site. This version of Durufle's Requiem still sets the standard. There have been many excellent productions since this was recorded, but this is the only one conducted by the composer, using his own choir and accompanied by his wife on the organ, along with a small orchestra. It still thrills me and breaks my heart. For anyone who loves this requiem, this recording is indispensable. There is a lot of other rereleased material included, all of it excellent. My one complaint is the paucity of liner notes.

Sublime Music

This is the Durufle requiem to own, despite some limitations. Beautifully directed by the composer in a suitable acoustic that allows all parts to this deeply religious work to be revealed. The music is played with suitable restraint allowing necessary vocal clarity, which is missing in most recorded performances of this work. Of the other items on this disc, the Four Motets are written in a similar vein to the Requiem, while the Mass"Cum Jubilo" and the organ work, Prelude and Fugue, are slightly more dramatic. All in all, this is beautiful music making of a high order, and despite the age of the recordings, from 1959, the sound is pleasant.
