Blaze of Glory????????

Well I had put off getting this CD because I'm no longer a fan of Westerns. I loved them on TV when I was very young, but that was a very, very, long time ago! But inspite of references to guns, dying, etc. this CD didn't really sound Western to me at all!
There were times when it sounded like Southwestern music. But the music was a very mixed bag. "Billy Get Your Guns" is a very western title, but the music was really very upbeat. The music in "Santa Fe" actually had a string section playing in it! "You Really Got Me Now" had a blues sound to it! And the last song on the album was an instrumental that sounded exactly like Spanish Bull Fighting music!!!!!!!!!!! After I had listened to the CD I looked up who was doing this music. When I saw names like Elton John and Little Richard I finally knew why all the music was very different. Jeff Beck did a lot of the Guitar playing and at times I thought he was trying to sound like Richie!!!!!!! Sorry Jeff you aren't Richie! I had heard Bon Jovi perform Blaze of Glory in some concerts on TV. This was a great song when Bon Jovi did it, but it didn't come off nearly as well on this CD without the band. Jon sang well as always which was the saving grace of this CD as far as I'm concerned! If anyone else had been doing the singing I would have rated it lower!

Bon Jovi-Blaze of Glory

Great album to show Jon's talent of writing and singing. Highly recommend this for Bon Jovi fans!

One of the greatest albums ever!

I've been a Bon Jovi fan since 1986 I think, but when I heard this album I was just blown away. This is not only my favorite Jon Bon Jovi album, but one of my all time favorites. I know Jon was inspired by the film in the first place but he just went so beyond that. I was living in the States when this songs became the soundtrack of everything that was going on with my life back then. The lyrics are very deep and can be applied to many situations in life, not just old western movies. Jon's singing is also one of the highest in his career, and you know he has very high standards. Each and every song on this record is so relevant and well written, it is just unbelievable that all of them fit so well in a whole package. Billy get your guns is a rocker that puts you in the right mood to listen to Miracle, I felt Jon captured a latin feel with this one, something that was not really expected. Blaze Of Glory, what else can be said? if you can't be touched by this one, you are probably dead already, The guitar solo is so perfect, Jeff Beck did an amazing job on this one (and the rest of the songs too), I mean, I love Richie Sambora, but he cannot top this solo on his performances with the band, Beck is a master and every note he plays goes so perfect with the song, he captured exactly what Jon was talking about. I think a lot of people over look the great contributions that the artists that played on this record did to the production. I mean, Jeff Beck's work on this one is huge, his tone and style make every song reach a whole new level, I love Beck's solo work, but when his great guitar talent is mixed with Jon Bon Jovi's singin and songwriting, it fires up a real magic that will last forever.
Blood money is a certain choice to play when you feel alone sitting on a mountain or something like that, it is a beautiful song and the lyrics are so powerful.
Santa Fe, I think words can't say enough about how I feel when I listen to this song, I think this is one of the greatest songs ever written, and that is a lot!! The lyrics are profound, meaninful and touching, and the melody, the singing, the arrangements, everything is just perfect on this song. I think Jon Bon Jovi will never be able to top this one because it just can't be better, there are just a few songs that you can say that have all the parts fitting perfectly, emotion, performance, lyrics, everything. I just can say no more about how great this song is.
Justice in a barrel is one of my favorites too, watch out that Jeff Beck solo, it starts on acoustic guitar and then goes electric with his classic tone, I just can't get enough of this.
To sum it up this is a record that you never get tired to listen too, and when you listen to it carefully it gets inside your feelings like no other. It is a shame that even Jon Bon Jovi seems to have forgotten this record, well, he's done some amazing job after this, but he hasn't achieved this level of greatness. There is a time in every songwriter's life that the light of music touches him or her very deep and achieves music heaven, I think Jon really did it with this one, it is too bad that this light don't shine the same way twice.

Bon Jovi at his best

I just discovered Bon Jovi in the last month, and just in the last month realized that I did not know what it was like to feel truly connected to a song or an artist. I now own 10 Bon Jovi albums, including this one, and love every single one of them -- the band is fantastic, but there is something special about this solo album. No one should be allowed to put as much heart and soul into anything as Jon Bon Jovi puts into these songs. He shows that he is a brilliant lyricist and vocalist in all of his albums, but takes both his lyrics and vocals to an entirely new level here. The only band album that compares to this one as far as being deep, raw, and personal is These Days.

Standout songs for me:

"Santa Fe" - the most searing, devastating, excruciatingly beautiful song every written or sung. Jon's vocals alone will rock your world, and are combined with the most penetrating lyrics imaginable -- if this song does not leave you shattered then you are probably made of steel. You will feel the blood and sweat and tears that I can only imagine Jon must have shed writing and performing this song.

"Miracle" - beware, this song will sneak up on you. It has a deceptively light, salsa type of feel, but packs a huge punch. Just listen to the lyrics and Jon's voice and don't be deceived by the "your savior has just left town" -- this is song is upbeat and powerful and quirkily encouraging, you'll listen to it over and over again trying to put your finger on its charm.

"Dyin' Ain't Much of a Livin'" - another hard hitter that will probably leave you on your knees, don't let the sedate tempo fool you. Jon can put a gravelly sob in his voice that leaves you tingling all over and completely heart-broken, have the tissues on hand.

"Never Say Die" - deceptively fun, upbeat rock style tune. Listen to the lyrics again, deep stuff. I never thought rock, even with a western flavor, could have so much power to touch.

"Blaze of Glory" - I can't say anything about this song that hasn't already been said. Deserves to be the title track and one of his biggest hits.

"Blood Money" - love, love the simple, bare-bones arrangement of this song. Short, thoughtful, all about Jon's voice, which really stands out.

I have left out alot of tracks -- but every track on this albums is worth listening to. If more people put this much of themselves into whatever they did the world would be a vastly different and probably much better place. Another reviewer describes Jon's singing on this album as "bleeding his heart out in every lyric" and I could not come up with a better description. If you love Bon Jovi, if you hate Bon Jovi, if you are alive... buy this album and prepare to be touched in a very raw, gritty, personal, authentic way. You will never listen to music the same again -- you might never be the same again.

Fantastic songs

The songs on this CD are sensational. Of course, Bon Jovi has a fantastic voice, but these songs really stay with you. Even if you haven't seen the movies, you should get the CD as the songs are beautiful.
