Macabee Gopher Traps

I have used the Macabee Gopher Trap on several occasions in the past. I was fortunate to have a neighbor that allowed me to borrow a pair prior to purchasing my own.

No rodent trap is a pleasure to use since they can be brutal in action but, the Macabee Gopher Trap is quick and effective. Some care must be exercised in setting these traps. It takes considerable effort and dexterity to get them set properly and you wouldn't want to get valuable body parts accidentally seized by one of these traps.

The alternative is poison. With family animals and other wildlife that could ingest poison by consuming the gopher, that really isn't an option.

Gophers can be incredibly destructive. Besides damaging the yard and eating plant roots, the will attack buried plastic water service lines and sprinkler piping. The Macabee Gopher Trap solved my gopher problem in a very effective way with the least environmental impact.

I have used these traps and had great success trapping gophers. Be sure to use two traps facing away from each other. Most of all gophers have a keen sense of smell, wear dirty gardening gloves. Rub the traps in the dirt before you set them. I cut up pieces of apple with my gloves on and place them in between the back of the traps. I cover the hole with a piece of plywood or cardboard. I once caught two gophers (one in each trap) this way.

Great trap, way overpriced

Great simple design. Wildly overpriced. In today's global economy these traps should sell for under $2.00. Sweeney makes the same trap for less than half the price (2 in a box), and even that is overpriced. By the way, read the instructions for setting the trap carefully. It is counterintuitive. I found the double trap technique unnecessary. Wait for the gophers to surface around dawn or dusk. Clear the hole and place the trap in so the metal flap is blocking the entry with open space around it. Make sure the tunnel is large enough for the jaws to work. The gopher will come back to close the hole. If it closes the hole without triggering the trap, clear the hole and reset the trap. With 4 traps I caught 6 gophers the first day. This is not for the squeamish. The traps often hook the gopher without killing it. You have to finish the job.
