update the picture
I read all the reviews before ordering this and before the person commented that it is now a 1-pc item. The picture shows a 2 pc. and a lot of the reviewers seem to be reviewing the 2 pc. I was disappointed because I expected what was in the picture and description. I credit the seller for saying I could return it but: 1. Why hassle with the return if the seller had nothing to replace it with and 2. this is apparently the only one Kitchen Aid is shipping.
I might luck up and find a seller that has the older, 2 pc.
shield
. If so, I'll buy it as I think this one will get scratched and ratty with the regular use.
The 1 pc. has a HUGE opening at the back. So while it might keep flour and other stuff from getting on you or the cabinet, it can still escape through that HUGE opening and get the mixer dirty/dusty.
I have used it and right now, I'm undecided. It's not bad but I really want the one in the picture.
Really, Amazon, update the photo!

Lefties beware...
I have used the
pouring
shield
several times and it is very useful. If I don't use it the flour in the recipe comes flying back out as I'm mixing. However, the newer version of it (I bought mine in Sept. 09) is right-handed. It is a one piece pouring shield that only fits on the mixer with the spout facing to the right, so I have to add all ingredients right-handed, which is not so easy when pouring a boiling sugar mixture into the mixer.
Dry Ingredients stay in the bowl
I have the 75th anniversary issue of the Kitchen Aid mixer.
(1994). I've had the
pouring
shield
for about the same amount of time. I used it a few times years ago and didn't think too much of it either way. Lately though, when I add flour even at the lowest speed, it throws it all over my counter...which makes me NOT happy. I decided to pull it out today and use it. The chute was very slippery, and I don't know why, but the flour slid right in with no coaxing.
Not one speck of flour went on the counter and I was using a 2 cup dry measuring cup. So I think the chute is quite wide enough. And when starting it up in the beginning of the recipe, none of the wet ingredients flew out of the bowl either; another problem I seem to have. I think the newer
mixers
have a much slower low speed setting, because my mixer sure doesn't have it. My shield is the 2 piece one and I'd definitely buy it again.

Redesigned -- all one piece
It looks like
Kitchenaid
paid attention to the feedback & redesigned the
shield
to be a one piece unit. It has a gap in the back, to slide around the mixer. Fits perfectly & keeps flour in the bowl, where it belongs. Well worth the money!
Another great item from Kitchenaid!
The
pouring
shield
makes pouring flour in a running mixer a lot less hassle. It also helps when pouring in a lot of wet ingredients in at once too.
One of the best features of a
stand
mixer is that you can add other ingredients while the mixing action is occuring. However, it can be a little tricky trying to get those eggs, or that sugar into the bowl, without getting in the way of a moving beater, or without ingredients sloshing outside the bowl. The answer to these difficulties is a
pouring
shield
. The chute lets you add ingredients from a safe distance while the "collar" prevents splashes from wet ingredients and "puff" from dry ingredients.
