Very good/comfortable trackball but NOT FOR MAC and NOT FOR LAPTOPS

I recently purchased two of the Logitech Cordless TrackMan Wheel trackballs. I needed/wanted one for my desktop Windows PC and one for my desktop Mac. I first hooked it up and installed it on the Windows PC and immediately loved it. Its ergonomic design makes it very comfortable (only for right handers) and the tracking is very responsive. I looked forward to installing it on my Mac.

I researched customer reviews, Loitech's Web site, PC World's Web site and Mac World. I could not find any support or even troubleshooting ideas for getting this product to work with my Mac. I was disappointed because I really do like the trackball. Additionally, the packaging claims that it is Mac compatible but if that's true, there's no help or Mac related instructions. Even the CD ROM that comes with the trackball does not have any MAC executables on it. So, I sent it (the second one) back. After doing some more research I bought, for my Mac, the Kensington Expert Mouse Trackball (model number 646325). Guess what? IT IS WAY BETTER than the Logitech. It is more expensive and it is NOT WIRELESS but in addition to being extrmely comfortable and responsive, it comes with a detachable wrist rest. I've priced comparable wrists rests and a comparable one is $15 - $20.

The Logitech is not suitable for laptops because a wired USB receiver needs to be plugged into your computer for the trackball to work. This would be very cumbersome in a laptop environment.

So, while the Logitech is a very good product, it is not, in my humble opinion, the best or most comfortable trackball out there. That, and the Mac non compatibility issue are the only reasons I gave this product 4 stars instead of 5. While some may argue that the price difference makes the Logitech a better "value" I disagree. These are items that I use 10 to 15 hours six days a week and having a comfortable solution that will prevent stress and/or carpal tunnel...well, an extra $15 or $20 for that is prevention I'm HAPPY to pay.

Buy this product for your Windows PC with confidence. If you buy the Logitech, for additional comfort, also buy the "Fellowes Gel Flex Transparent Mini Wrist Rest (Blue Crystal)" for $12.99 at Amazon.

Or, if you don't need a wireless solution buy the Kensington, which has a very comfortable padded wrist rest included.

Happy Computing!

trackman is and always has been superb

The trackman has been my favorite of all mice since I started using it. The only drawback-that can't be avoided-is that the trackball sensors get dirty after while and you need to disassemble it to clean the sensors. But then it's as good as new. It's the only mouse I'll ever use. Since your keeping your wrist in one position, it's great for reducing carpel tunel syndrome.

Fine Product is it right for you?

Great product no brainer to install. The only downside is that it has a sizable receiver and is not a fob type commony used with lap tops. So for a desk top this is perfect. If you plan on using a mouse from a distance it may also come in handy.

I find it excellent for surfing the net but can be a challange for percise use like graphics such as photoshop etc.

Better than traditional mouse

I have my computer desk cluttered with papers, coffee cups, pens, etc and have limited space. This stationery mouse eliminates the constant aggravation of moving the traditional mouse on its "pad" and banging it on the desk everytime the cursor finds its way off the screen and I can only reclaim it with a quick bang making it reappear on the screen. I quickly got use to the thumb "ball" although it sticks at times (it freely floats, but if I'm doing very detailed work and want to highlight perhaps just one letter in a sentence the ball tends to slightly "stick" and after gently applying the needed pressure to move it, it jumps too far and has to be done over again). My main reason for getting this wireless mouse was the limited space on my desk and not wanting to continually be moving the mouse in a cramped area. For this reason I'm glad I purchased it.

Just Ordered My Third One

I just ordered what will be my third cordless trackman in the past 5 or 6 years. I also have a corded trackman that I use exclusively with my laptop. I'm a trackball kind of guy, never could stand using a mouse, and of all the ones I've tried, the cordless trackman is my favorite. It has three buttons and a scroll wheel (the wheel is also the third button), all of which you can program to do as you wish, and at any sensitivity, in the control panel. I am also a Mac man, and have never had a single problem with drivers, programming, or anything else software related.

The only reason I gave this item 4 stars instead of 5 is because they aren't perfect. Close, but not quite. Mine seem to last about 2.5 years before one or more of the button switches actually breaks, at which time I just replace it. I admit, however, that I am probably somewhat rough on mine, so yours will probably last longer. My cordless models go through a single AA battery every 8 to 10 weeks, or so, maybe longer.

The other problem I have discovered with these is that the ball itself is not exactly the same in every one I've bought. They are probably supposed to be, but the one that came with my corded trackman is just slightly smaller than the others. It was enough of a difference to make it difficult to control the pointer with any great precision. Swapping in the ball from one of my retired trackmans solved that issue.

The only maintenance mine have ever required, other than a new battery every couple of months, is to clean the three rolling points that the ball rests on inside it's little cove. All you have to do is pop the ball out, and wipe each of the points with a Q-tip. It literally takes no more than 10 seconds, start to finish, and should be done once a month, depending on use. I read a review where someone was having an issue where the ball seemed to slightly stick sometimes. That is an issue that will almost certainly be corrected by cleaning those rolling points with a Q-tip like I just described.

One last point I feel I should make involves the battery. I highly recommend using only high quality alkaline batteries. Rechargeable batteries don't last long at all, and become a nuisance when you have to replace it every other week. Low quality batteries tend to leak acid, and once that starts, your trackman will be ruined. Spend the extra quarter and use Duracell, or something comparable.

Hope this helped someone. :)
