MUST HAVE LENS FOR CANON USERS!
If you're a professional photographer you probably wouldn't be looking at this
lens
anyways. But if you're thinking about getting this lens, then get it! It's very sharp, has very nice bokeh and it's very inexpensive. Yes the lens mount is plastic but the lens is so light that it doesn't matter. I don't think getting the metal mount version justifies the price difference, and just cause it's plastic doesn't mean it's going to break off. If you do manage to break it off then your
camera
is probably pretty damage so that's the least of your worries. There's a lot of confussion on whether to get this lens or a 35mm for a "normal" lens due to the cropping factor on entry level dslrs. But I assure
50mm
is still the normal lens regardless if the image is cropped. If you think about it, it makes sense. Yeah the image might fill the frame like a 80mm but it doesn't make it an 80mm just as 35mm is still 35mm. You can't change the focal length of the lens, at least not by cropping. When you look through the view finder, it's still close to normal perspective. So if you're looking for a good normal lens that is inexpensive and does good bokeh, you need to grab this lens. I absolutely love taking photos with it.

Awesome Portrait lens
This is a great prime
lens
by
Canon
as all the other reviews have pointed out. I use it mainly for portraits. Because of the low f-stop, the depth of field can be adjusted to be shallow enough to get just the right amount of background of blur. It is also great for indoor shots in low light.
My new Canon Prime Lens
No cropping, no color enhancing, just straight out of the
camera
to the computer, photography. This is what modern photography has evolved into.. All photos were shot with my new prime 50 mm
lens
and with the minimal set up time. All those "point and shoot" photos, over the past 7 years were merely practice shots. These are shots that I used to dream about while browsing the photography books at the public library when I was just a kid in the seventh grade. No amount of money could have made these quality reproductions, 60 years ago.

awesome piece of lens.
this is a great
lens
for what its worth.
recommended... amatuer to experts.
Nifty-fifty...
I got exactly what I saw when I read about it, it's a really good
lens
for the price. I actually like the lightweight part of it, you may hear it's built cheap, to me, just because it's not metal doesn't mean it's cheap. Being light has it's advantages, the glass itself is just like the glass I used in my 35mm days, good stuff, so I don't have anything but good to say about this lens.
The thing is, some people equate plastic as cheap, and in the
camera
world, there are also some people that are snooty, just like any other group, if you don't have a METAL prime lens, then you have junk.
We are surrounded by plastics in our every day life, so why is it any different in the camera world?
Buy it, you won't be sorry, and be sure to check for pricing, I have seen it jump around wildly, but it should be in the low eighties. (USD)
I do want to say though, the price was good, but mine was shipped in a box about 8"x8", there was no packing, bubble wrap, peanuts, whatsoever in it, it was free floating. I couldn't believe that someone would allow that to go out like that. (It was still in the original box from
Canon
though, and that's probably what saved it)
It did make it fine though, and it wasn't Amazon's fault really, it was the smallish company that they used though, so be careful which one you pick.
I was really happy overall though, it all worked out and I still give it 5 stars. :)

Compact and high-performance, this standard
lens
is the lightest EF lens of all at a mere 4.6 oz. (130g). Its Gaussian optics provides sharp delineation from near to far focusing distances. The color balance is excellent for a standard lens.
