Amazing! Landmark in interactive storytelling!
Normally, I play adventure games, but I check out RPGs sometimes for diversity. I played most of the Elder Scrolls games for a while, but I lost interest in them after a while, because I found it impossible to care about what happened when only the more major characters were even one-dimensional. This game may not have all the depth of a book or novel, but I found myself drawn in, and actually concerned about the outcome. Maybe I would have liked more conversation options to get to know them better, but for a video game, the characterization is still remarkable.
As you may know, the game begins, some 4000 years before the movies, with your escape from an attacked ship above a remote planet, which is not the only thing that will sound familiar. But I didn't really care. Throughout the game, you build a party of followers (who I found myself beginning to like and care about), and like in the Elder Scrolls games, have constant choices about how to behave in any given circumstances, and optional side-quests. Unlike the Elder Scrolls games, your characters are rated on a scale from Light to Dark, and their placement on the scale is affected by their actions. The freedom isn't as great as in the Elder Scrolls games, partly because the game worlds just aren't as big, but see above. I don't know that the story is that great on its own terms, but the way they place you insides it makes up for it. There's a twist I sadly found out online ahead of time, so don't make my mistake, and avoid online plot summaries.
Of course, fighting and building up skills are loads of fun, though the former, which involved choosing a particular attack or several in advance, seemed rather "hands-off". And character types, Jedi or otherwise, fit into traditional RPG categories (fighter/thief/magic user), roughly.
Well worth your time.

Wow
Yes, this game has weird requirments to be supported, but I have never had any problems with the game. The storyline enthralled me and totally consumed me. You will meet many colorful characters but the dialogue is not as notable as in the second game. You will travel to beautifuly created worlds, but Tatooine was not all the great. Manaan and Taris are the absolute best planets. I really enjoyed everything about this game and it will entertain for many hours. I guess you should buy it as part of the best of
star
wars
package because I had absolutely no problems with that version. You are really missing out if you have never played this game. I can not praise the creators of this game enough!!!

(KOTOR) is definitely one of the best game a story-oriented RPG fan can play. This is the game, that, along with The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, remains in my memory as a mature and entertaining piece of art. RPG elements are not as rich as e.g. in some AD&D games, or maybe even above-mentioned Morrowind. Still, they are very well designed. Gameplay never feels boring, although some of the locations could seem repetitive. But where this game really shines is *character development* and *story*. When talking about character development, I mean also other "main characters" (yes, although you have are the main hero, you'll travel with several companions) and their relationships. If you ever played Mass Effect, you can get a grasp of it, only KOTOR is much better. Story begins a little slowly, but soon it surprises you with the options and richness -- and that is not the greatest surprise that waits for you there.
KOTOR was the first game I played that allowed me to choose the good / bad side and still I feel that this is the game that does this job the best. I actually had to replay the game multiple times just to try all the other options.
There are also some minor annoyances -- like the repetitiveness I have mentioned above. And it is not just about locations. It is also about character voices (especially those non-human, which have sometimes very limited set of sentences). And... unfortunately, I experienced some issues that caused the game to crash from time to time -- this was for sure the biggest annoyance. Graphics can look a little out-dated and simple now, but still it is very good and I don't mind, I would play it once again!
Bottom line: If you want a game that will entertain you for 40 - 60 hours (at least, you can play it more times using different options) and you want it to have deep story, rich characters, great music, great quests with moral dilemmas, don't think. Get this game as soon as you can!

The game still rocks
I got this game for my birthday after my
old
er brother recommended it. Even though it's several years old, it's still a lot of fun to play. Lots of options. Only problem I've found is the character can freeze up in heavily populated areas and then move really fast. Must be a memory issue. Definitely worth the cost though.
Excellent
Thank God for BioWare. This game is very fun and intuitive to play. The characters are good, the game mechanics and presentation are great, and the storyline is about as good as you can get from a
Star
Wars
RPG. The villain is kind of a letdown compared to Irenicus from Baldur's Gate II but everything else falls into place nicely.
Just a thought, don't level up your character beyond 5 or so before you become a Jedi, that way you'll advance farther as a Jedi and get more Force Powers. Earn all the EXP you can but don't do the leveling process.
