Norpro Deluxe Cherry Stoner/Pitter

I bought one of these for my father. He liked it so much he had me buy two more for friends and family. I have not used or seen it used, but he say it takes the pit out without messing up the cherries. They keep their shape. He has been very happy with it.

Replacing it after about 12 years

When my cherry tree started producing around 12 years ago, I bought an orange version of this machine. Most years I've pitted about 20 quart bags of sour cherries with it and just now enough of the parts have worn out that I need to replace it. Looking at the current options, I will get the same thing.

Pros:
Spring action allows for a quick run through of a mess of cherries.
Holding bin takes a handful of berries, easy to guide them one at a time through the pitter.
Design allows pitted cherry to pull off pitter and slide into bowl.

Watch fors:
About one in 10 pits get caught or a berry fails to go down the chute so you have to clear it by hand. No big deal, but it slows you down.
I guide cherries into the pitting place one at a time, otherwise they bunch up and some can roll out into the bowl unpitted.
I usually end up with five or so pits found in a couple quarts of fruit.
Important to take everything apart and clean well; nasty to find old cherry muck on the gadget the next time you get it out and the plunger rusts if left in the machine.
I don't have a table to attach the vise to, so instead I stand it in the sink on a sponge or towel to cushion the screw at the bottom. This height is also better for me when hitting the plunger. Left hand holds on to the hopper so it doesn't slide and feeds the cherries in, right hand hits the plunger. I put a big bowl in the sink to catch the fruit.

What wears out:
The rubber part with the hole that holds the cherry in place is good for a couple seasons only. The edges of the hole break off. I tried making my own out of yogurt lids, then using an old one for backing to stiffen it. OK for another couple years.
What finally is making me replace the machine is the spring. It has snapped into increasingly shorter sections, now too short to hold the plunger high enough to clear a cherry.
The general grubbiness has also gotten to me; years of cherry grime in the corners that is hard to wash off.

Wishes: that it came with a second spring and more rubbers.

Final rating: A four--you do have to watch what you are doing, I could do without the screw at the bottom, but still want the height, and for something I use for four or five days a year I wish the parts stood up better. On the other hand, it looks to be the best option out there for hand pitting a lot of fruit.

I bought the Norpro Deluxe Cherry stoner after having used the old fashioned cherry stoners (actually the antique kind). We pick about 15 gallons of cherries each year and freeze them. With the Norpro, the cherries were pitted within a couple hours. I simply established a routine by filling the feeder up, guiding the cherries with one hand, and operating the "punch" with the other. Worked great! What is really nice about this pitter/stoner is that the cherry stays whole and intact retaining the juice. They are not smashed as in the old fashioned pitter. If you are serious about cherries, I highly recommend this stoner.

Great Product

If you are doing very many cherries, this is definatley what you need. I have one and it is really great for taking the pits out of the cherris. Does not squeeze the juice out of the cherries, takes hours out of pitting cherries. A must have for anyone with a cherry tree.
