Nothing "special" about this "one"

Cheap Trick can do better and they know it.

This album is a mixed bag, from start to finish.

The opening track is a clunky Who rip-off.

"Words" is a pedestrian ballad and "Best Friend" is filler.

"My Obsession" is easily the best song here, but it is a left over track from one of their previous albums.

There are a couple other good songs here, but 3 or 4 good songs does not an album make.

Scent of a Woman is NOT a Cover...

Just thought that needed to be said...its a Cheap Trick Original...the boys can still bring it when they try.

Six years is too long to wait..........

The release of Special One came 6 years after Cheap Trick (97) and was too long a wait. Luckily we've only have to wait 3 years for Rockford.
For me this is a solid entry in CT's vast discography.
Taken as a complete album it's probably doesn't play aswell as it should. Take each individual track on its own though and it's filled with instant classics. It's more of a collection of songs than a whole 11 track album to listen to from start to finish with each song complimenting the other.
It's not the sort of CD you give to the uninititated as it's very diverse. It has some of the hardest stuff they've done and some of the sapiest.

1. Scent Of A Woman is a nice rocker. Great chorus, good solid drum beat. The lyrics though........ what's up with them?
2. Too Much is a great track.
3. Special One grew on me over time. I really love the slow first half and the humming at the start.
4. Pop Drone is a low point. Doesn't really go anywhere. Is that the point though?
5. My Obsession is the best track.
6. Words is a close second. Perhaps should have ended a bit sooner though. Once the climax is over, the rest is just marking time.
7. Sorry Boy has a great beat to it.
8. Best Friend builds and builds and then bang. Perhaps also goes for too long at the end though.
9. If I could is a bit sappy. The lyric isn't wonderful.
10. Low Life In High Heels is brilliant. Says what Hummer does in half the time.
11. Hummer should be a B Side track.

For me this ranks 5th in CT Studio albums. Below the brilliant Woke Up With A Monster, above Cheap Trick (77).

Find it, buy it, love it and remember - Don't campare what they do now with what they did in the 70's!!!

(Un) Special One only in the sense of the good bonus DVD 'trick' inside

This is an ordinary **.5 star, Tom Peterson influenced
Cheap Trick album that seems to have been the kind of
rush job that has hurt this normally vveerrry good
group his 'Dagmar-ness' has returned in late '87. No,
it's sure not bad (even Woke Up With A Monster, Busted
and even In Colour have their moments...well, make that
'moment',with I.C...), but could have been better
since it TOOK SIX YEARS TO COME OUT SINCE
THE fine 1997 effort 'Cheap Trick'.

Imagine that the record company pushed 'Scent of a Woman' as
the best of the lot here (Pop Drone, my eye...). If that's
the best the Tricksters have left in them, god help us Cheap
Trick fans. And god help this once great band...[It get's 2.5
stars if you rate it on the CD alone on a normal *-**** star
scale]

Review from a Rock Legend!!!

Ignore opinion and stick with fact. I have a wall of platinum albums and have been on the scene since 1983. I opened for Trick in 1984. This album is as all their albums are, GENIUS! Best vocals, best songs, best band in the world! Every song is a musical delight. Best Friend blows your head off and helps you to see where kurt Cobain tried and failed to get his sound. The ballads and mid-tempo tunes are beyond words as well. Cheap Trick has never made an album, or written a single song that didnt fall into the category of BRILLIANT! Buy this and all their records. Ignore the review at the top. He doesnt write songs, so his review is as valid as .......nothing! Feel free to email for Cheap Trick discussion. No, I do not list my real name, just birth name. Cheers, Craig Braginsky

Their studio output hampered by label turmoil for the better part of a decade, the veterans in Cheap Trick instead focused on burnishing their history and stellar live reputation with 1999's Music for Hangovers and 2001's Silver. But that back-to-the-future tack hardly heralded their descent into nostalgic act, as this warm surprise of a studio album reaffirms on virtually every track. Largely sidestepping the blistering pop thrash and hook-filled acoustic ballads that have long tempted stereotyping, the Trick has produced arguably the most texturally intriguing album of their long career, a forceful reminder of the true depth of their talents and breadth of eclectic influences. The opening single, "Scent of a Woman," goes from simmer to boil in record time, while "Too Much" and the title track give a Trick spins on late '60s UK psych-pop. From there, they seem to consciously tip their hats to the growing cadre of young pop and alt stars who claim them as inspirations, with the help of Chris Shaw and guest fellow producers Jack Douglas (Aerosmith and the first CT album) and Steve Albini (the sexed-up minimalism of "Low Life in High Heels" and encroaching darkness of "Sorry, Boy"). This is an album spawned by four lifelong love affairs with rock's disparate possibilities--and a special one, indeed. --Jerry McCulley
