Great for web and casual photography
I'm a blogger who has a blog about birds and needed a
lens
that could get me closer to them so that I can capture their natural behavior. This is the best lens I could afford right now, but plan to get a "better" birding lens later.
I have to say that I am having so much fun with this lens and am glad that I didn't let the "photography snobs" cause me to sit out and wait any longer. Yes, it does have a lot of limitations, but a photography isn't always about the equipment, but the one who handles the camera. Will you get great photos with this lens? Probably, if certain conditions and handling are right you will get some pretty good photos. Will it be easy to get those great photos? Probably not. You will have to use your photography knowledge and take several shots of the same thing.
I've noticed that when the light is low, this camera has a very narrow depth of field due to the higher aperture. You have to hit your subject exactly right or it will be fuzzy. Or, if you have a "deep" subject, part of that subject will be blurry. But, during bright light or with flash, the depth of field is better and you are more likely to get a better photo.
On the plus side, I have found that I can take clear photos at full focal length while holding it in my hands. A tripod helps, but it is possible to use this lens at full length while holding it in your hand if you have reasonably steady hands.
If you are trying to get into competitions or start a professional photography business, I wouldn't count on this lens breaking you in. But, if you are a casual photographer or run a blog or other website where you use photos, this is a great lens, especially for a beginner.

just okay
I bought this to replace my NIkkor 55-200mm, for my D40. I don't think the auto focus was nearly as fast and couldn't keep up with simple action shots that I needed to
zoom
in on. The shots were crisp and clear, once I got them. The auto focus also had a hard time locking in on a complicated background when zooming, for example a butterfly on a leaf, if there was any foreground, it kept focusing on that. I had to switch to manual to get the shot, something I never had to do with the nikkor.
I could never get the
macro
to work correctly.
I had read complaints about the motor noise, I did notice the difference, but it wasn't bothersome.
Mine my have been defective, since other reviews I read were more positive. I ended up returning this
lens
, spending extra and buying another nikkor 55-200.

Decent lens, bargain price
I was looking for a nice long
zoom
but without any specific project in mind so I didn't want to spend a lot of money. Well, this
lens
beat my expectations on price by quite a bit and I'm very satisfied with the quality. I've only had my hands on it a few hours but I've taken several of the kinds of pictures I expect to use it for and it works great.
Build quality seems good, zoom was a little stiff from 200mm up but after some exercise it's fine (or I'm used to it). The
macro
switch only engages between 200 and 300 mm and also has restrictions on the focus position. That caused me a momentary scare when I thought the switch was jammed, but adjusting the focus released it. (I know, read the instructions, huh?) Apparently the AF can exceed the macro limit so if the switch seems stuck, go to manual focus and pull the lens in a bit. Focus is decently fast if a little noisy (not bad at all, has a kind of authority to it).
Cons: Well, it doesn't perform like an $1,800 lens, but what the heck. Focus is not internal so be careful about blocking the movement of the front tube. My only real complaint is that it obviously got bounced around in shipping and because of that the lens cap was pushed down into the filter ring. Fortunately, the plastic of the cap is so weak it didn't damage the threads and didn't go so far as to hit the glass. (I would have returned it in that case, of course.)
Conclusion: Much better than the price suggests.

good lens
I am very happy with this
lens
. I bought it for my Nikon D40x and have had very good results so far. My biggest complaint is that it is a bit noisy.
Not totally satisfied
I'm new to the Digital
SLR
cameras
. I've owned a
Canon
A-1 since 1981 and had a variety of
lens
'. I purchased a Canon DSLR about a month ago and wasn't impressed with the lens that came with the camera. With my A-1 I had a Quantaray 85-300
Zoom
with
macro
lens. After looking at lens, the
Sigma
was a great deal. It operates well on auto zoom and I get impressive photos even at
300mm
. Being new to the digital SLR, when I switch the lens to macro, the closest you can be from your subject is
4-5
feet. With my Quanataray I could get as close as 3-4 INCHES and be able to focus in. I could get some great photos of flowers and little things in nature. Time will tell if the macro portion of this lens will surrice.
