Just an awesome and useful item!

Update November 2008: I still have my two pens, and still love them. It is now out in PINK and a matte silver, for the holidays I guess? I saw them in Fahrney's catalog. There may be other exclusive colors at other outlets.

I have two Cross Tech 3 pens... a blue one and a chrome one. I love the availability of a fine-point pencil or a pen. I've replaced the black pen point with a blue one, and unfortunately Cross does not yet make a blue/black refill, so I've had to install another brand of refill, and it's not quite as fine, which is too bad. I don't use the red very much but it is handy to have. The pen writes with a wonderfully smooth, very fine line, and the colored pen (I have blue but this would be true of black as well) is not so slippery in hand as the chrome.
These pens take a fair bit of abuse; I have dropped mine and it has come apart sometimes and I have just put it back together. They don't like to get wet, though, so try not to leave them in your pocket through the wash, or fall in a lake, or get soaked in the rain. They can get a little water on the outside but don't immerse them. Also I have found that the twist-off eraser cover tends to come loose. In fact I lost one (my own fault for having it in my back pocket that week) but you can buy replacement tops directly from Cross. If you just check the top now and then, like when you use it, you should be OK.
I also like fountain pens, very much, and my favorite is the Namiki Falcon, with its flexible nib and very fine line, but you can't make a carbon with a fountain pen, and they don't like sitting idle for days. The Cross Tech3 is a good workhorse, and it's easy to get refills, and I highly recommend it. Very Solid Performance

Overall I'm very pleased with the Satin Blue Tech 3. The pen was a little "tight" when switching between black/red/pencil for the first couple of days, but quicky loosened up for more effortless twists. All writing points are very solid when extended, unlike some multi functions which have a good bit of wobble when in use. Overall, the pen feels as if it's constructed very well with quality parts. The satin coating seems very tough, and has some texture to negate slippage when writing. The pocket clip seems very well constructed and durable as well.

I own one of these pens in the "Lustrous Chrome" finish, and, after picking one up in this beautiful enameled blue finish, the blue pen is the one I use daily. It's got a better weight to it, the finish allows for a more secure grip, and I get constant compliments on this pen.

After my heavy use of this pen, I still have yet to have any issues with its functionality. I've dropped it many times, and, unlike some other, cheaply made multi pens out there, have never had any issues with getting it to work.

Switching tips is, literally, as easy as twisting the shaft. You have to be sure, though, to push the lead back into the pencil mechanism, as too much lead left sticking up will get in the way of switching tips.

Hands down, out of all of the pens that I've purchased over the years (I started out with fountain pens, and have quite a few really nice ones, before I moved on to the more practical multi pen), this one is my all-time favorite. It's a very stylish, professional pen that combines all that you could really hope for, in one. Instead of having to lug around a separate pencil, all that you need is here, along with two different ink color options, which I feel cover all of the bases for your standard user. The satin blue finish is luxurious and professional looking, without looking like every other pen out there. And Cross is great with their customer service. I lost an end cap for each of my multi pens, and I called to ask them how to go about ordering replacements, and they simply sent me extras (yes, plural!) free of charge!

This is a great pen to have in your collection. I'm confident that, once you pick one up, you'll find yourself satisfied enough with this pen to stop searching for a better one. I really do believe that this is the best multi pen out there.
